364 days left.

Friends!

So I survived the day of doom and am so glad that I have 364 days of peace and quiet ahead. There’s no particular reason why I hate my birthday. I just do. Either there’s way too much attention so that I feel extremely uncomfortable or there’s too little (ok, that has never happened before..) which makes (or would make) me feel like no one really cares. I’m definitely NOT scared of getting older. Why do people freak out when they turn 30, 40 or 50?? Some people tell me that I “think like that” because “I’m still young” but I honestly think that age doesn’t matter. Take my grandmother for example; she’s over 70 and the most beautiful person (inside and out) I know! I embrace getting older (and wiser) ;) .

But you know what? Yesterday wasn’t that bad though I didn’t do much. Ok let’s be honest: I didn’t do anything at all. After getting up I had a fabulous bowl of porridge, did some working out on the stepping machine (for 1,5 hours.. how did that happen?) then it was already 1pm. Sure, it wouldn’t be such a shocker if I would have gotten up at 10am but I was actually wide awake by 7am.

Lunch was perfect. Pure beauty.

Insert note about Florence: I will post a proper recap tomorrow. My camera died after two days and I will get my boyfriend’s camera’s pics tonight. Thanks for being patient :)

At 2pm I went into the city and bought some exciting things (like socks.. and carrots..) and met up with my mum. It was a gorgeous day but I had asked her if she wanted to come to our place to watch New Moon. You know, my mum loves the Twilight saga and the film doesn’t get released until April 18 over here. So when I saw the DVD in Florence I knew I had to buy it for mum. (I’m totally getting some brownie points ;) )

My sis came home at 6:30pm or so and we dove right into some Chianti and a snack plate that she prepared.

I obviously ate all of the meat. JK ;)

For dinner we went to one of my favourite restaurants in Bern..

SNB13957

Metzgerstübli literally means something like the butcher’s (small) living room. Definitely the perfect place for a vegetarian ;) .

But all joking aside; besides the amazing flavour of their dishes I’m really impressed that they buy their veggies on the market right in front of the restaurant and also only use meat of small local farms and declare from where (aka from which butcher) they buy it. Sure, I am a supporter of animal rights but I also think it’s nice that some restaurants care for the origin of the meat and that the animal is treated well (even though it ends up being served on a plate).

The bread was served with an amazing sundried tomato pâté of sorts.

For starters I had a fresh salad.

and then I got a mind-blowing risotto. It was made with some Riesling sauce, sea grass and vanilla bourbon (!). They also added some flower petals.

SNB13961

There was a small hint of vanilla which was amazing. I will definitely re-create this menu at home.

My annoying lovely family talked about my birthday when the waitress brought the wine and after dinner she presented me with a passion fruit sorbet. How nice of her!

Tonight I’ll go and have dinner with Silvio. He was too busy yesterday which was a bummer but I’m really looking forward to tonight’s date. :)

Q: Do you dislike getting older? If yes: Why is it bothering you? I admit that (maybe) some wrinkles and, you know, the “boobs moving southwards” would bother me at first but I think that any age is beautiful. I want to get wrinkly because it would show that I’ve had my fair share of laughs and other funny facial movements ;) .

    Aw, happy belated birthday!
I honestly do not dislike getting older. It can be scary (more responsibilities, etc) but as far as my body and mind goes… it’s all good. :)

  2. Karin,
overall it does not seem like you had a bad day :)
oh getting older is tough but really not until your my age ;)
maybe you are an old soul in a young body!
i have learned since turning forty-gulp-don’t worry about the things you have no control over and live your best life now!
    xoxo

  3. Looks like a beautiful birthday! That risotto is stunning.

I hate birthdays too…or, I don’t even know if “hate” is the right word– I just want my birthday to be just another day, you know? I’m not a big fan of making a big show of it…although I do love gifts :-)

That restaurant looks amazing! I’ve never been to a place here in NY that tells you where the meat came from. I don’t eat meat but a big part of that is because I think factory farming is so ridiculously horrible. It’s so great there are still places that get their meat from local farms! And I love how there are rose petals in your risotto. So pretty!

I am scared about getting older! And I think me and you are like the same age. I turn 23 in September. I wish I had your outlook! I just feel like I need to do all these cool things when I’m young and I’m not really doing anything right now so I feel like I’m wasting my youth!

  5. Marina says:

I have a bad history with birthdays, and I always want to spend my day doing something special, having fun. And that always turns out totally opposite.
I don’t dislike getting older, but turning 20 is actually scaring me, because I think I haven’t accomplished much with my life yet.

  6. coco says:

it seems that you had a good day! :)
I’m still young enough to say that I’m not afraid of aging, but maybe when I’m 35 I will.
    great eats!

  7. These pics are absolutely amazing from your travels!! LOVE THEM! So glad you’re able to experieicne this!

Getting older….bothered me more in my mid 20s than it does now that I am 33 :) I feared having a child would leave me looking like a “has been” but I still think I look good…and even if I didnt, getting older and having kids is part of (most) people’s lives :)

  8. Michelle says:

Wow the risotto ALMOST looks like a succulent bowl of oatmeal!! How fancy that they put flower petals over the top too! Presentation is such a huge component of a dish sometimes. :)

  9. The only thing that scares me about getting older is getting sicker/weaker and not being able to do things for myself. That’s why I’m trying to get healthy and take good care of myself to ensure that I can be one of those 90 year old grandma’s that’s still running around full of life.

Other than that, I like getting older because I feel wiser and more in tune with myself :)

  10. Happy late birthday! :-) I feel the same way, I get uneasy when I’m the center of attention. But agree with your views on getting older, the numbers don’t bother me. Great eats, the risotto looks wonderful. Can’t wait to see the trip pics.

  11. Tamizn says:

Happy late birthday! It sounds like you had a good day, I don’t really care about getting older other than the wrinkles not to keen on them! x x

  12. janetha says:

what? it was your birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! why do you hate it.. you should loooove it :)

  13. Your birthday eats look soo yummy. I hate getting older! Only because I look like I’m 12 so the older I get the weirder it is when I tell people my real age.

  14. Karla says:

For some reason I thought this was just hilarious: “At 2pm I went into the city and bought some exciting things (like socks.. and carrots..) ” Thanks for the daily smile!

I’m not really too concerned with getting older. Just part of life I guess…

  15. katie says:

aww this seems like a GREAT day girl! i dont really care about getting older-its the faster i age, the faster i get to heaven ! haha!

  16. Ildie says:

YAY for Birthdays. So far my 30-something experience has been “interesting”. Check this out… I was admitted for surgery ON my 30 Birthay. As in, I spent it in the hospital waiting to be cut open two days later. I had my gallbladder removed. Nothing serious and I still laugh at it today. What a welcome to your 30’s right? HA!

Seriously though, I embrace my 30’s. I think for most people, it’s when you truly figure out who you really are. Which was the case for me. I’m happier now then I’ve ever been. :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN! May you wrinkle slowly with grace!

  17. Nicole, RD says:

    Happy Belated Birthday!!!!!

  18. kilax says:

Happy belated! Sorry I am so late :( I do not mind getting older. I feel like I get wiser as I age ;)
