Confused K + Workout Fuel

Posted in Breakfast, Lunch, Running, Working Out on March 18th, 2010 by Karin – 13 Comments

Hello my dear foodie friends! I am at work (got to stay until 9pm – oh the excitement!) and am currently taking a break to eat dinner. Nom nom.

You know, it’s actually incredibly amusing to train for a 10 miles race with the boyfriend. You get to send funny texts to each other like: “Oh god! There are going to be longer speedwork sessions! I think I’ve got to vomit”. Oh the shared passion between two lovebirds…

;)

After 5,5 hours of sleep it was surprisingly easy to get up this morning. What’s up with that? I always feel groggy when I get 7 hours of sleep. Sleep is such a mystery to me (but still one of my very favourite hobbies ;) ).

I went to the gym bright and early, did my full body workout (doesn’t that sound fierce?) and ran 2 miles.

Pre / post workout fuel

I usually eat two dates before an early morning workout (I can tell the difference if I don’t). I used to have them with almond butter all the time but my nut butter consumption is slowly getting out of control so I’m trying to reduce it a bit. Plain dates do the trick though. Post-workout I make sure to get in some good protein and carbs and lately tend to rely on my protein bars because they don’t require any prepping time. I have smoothies when I’m less stressed and I sometimes have an egg too.

What is your favourite pre/post workout fuel? Do you even pay attention to pre/post workout food?

My “real” breakfast was muesli with soy yogurt, 1/2 banana and frozen blueberries.

SNB13706

Frozen blueberries look so adorable when they sort of melt into the muesli..

SNB13707

Those 4-grain cakes with buckwheat are addictive! I can’t stop eating them. :) I had two of them for lunch (one with some sunflower seed paté that doesn’t look very pretty) and for dessert the other 1/2 of the banana and some peanut butter.

SNB13710

God I must be boring you with my salads but I can’t help myself.. I LOVE them!

SNB13711

This bowl had:

  • about 3 cups of spinach
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 carrot
  • some almond & sesame tofu
  • sunflower seed paté
  • balsamic vinegar
  • pepper

So good!

There are some great recipes in this month’s German Yoga Journal that I can’t wait to try. For those of you who are wondering: Yes I still practice yoga as regularly as possible (I try to hit the mat at least 5 times a week) but it’s taken a backseat now with all that running.. There’s just too little time. :( However, I still make sure to get some yoga time in. I would go nuts without it!

To be honest, I’ve been feeling sort of.. weird.. lately. I have WAY too many things on my plate but don’t know how I could possibly change that. The thing is, I’m not stressed out (it really takes a lot to stress me). It’s just a very weird feeling that is hard to describe. And I guess you could say that I’m a bit confused. I’m constantly running around (literally too! ;) )  and it feels like my whole self can’t keep up with that pace. I’m so glad for yoga and for some rare me-time that keeps me grounded and calm. Sure, there are a lot of things that I do that I don’t have to do (like training for a race for example) but things like these keep me sane. Maybe all these things that keep me sane are together a bit overwhelming?!? I’m sorry.. I’m rambling!

Have you ever felt like this too?

ps: As you see, I’m back to the normal 12 pt font. Which size do you like better? I’m still not sure.. (Again: Sorry! I seem to be kind of confusing tonight. Must be all that work! Oh and thinking about it.. Got to get back to it! :) )

Green Day

Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch, Running on March 17th, 2010 by Karin – 18 Comments

Happy St. Patty’s day my friends!

When I woke up this morning I knew that it was speedwork day. I also knew that I didn’t have time for a run in the evening because I would go to my parent’s and then to a theatre so I had to fit it in in the morning. Yawn. The only problem was that I really REALLY wasn’t in the mood for super fast running.

But some magical powers pulled me out of bet, got me dressed and pushed me outside. I was done with the 4 x 800 5-k pace before I knew it. “4 x 800 5-k pace” means (in normal language) that you have to run 800 meters in a 5-k pace for 4 times, with walking/jogging in between. It was a good run :) .

SNB13702

Reading about the food that you guys don’t like was so much fun! I was shocked when I saw chickpeas, olives or garlic on that list. But hey, it’s cool that you don’t like these foods.. You might think it’s crazy that I don’t like brussel sprouts or fruity tea but that’s ok too :) .  It’s good that we’re all different. (But we can still be friends, right?? ;) ).

I must say that I am surprised that something like pickled pigs feet existed… Eww!!

Breakfast today was an oldie but a goodie. For today’s porridge I used:

  • 1/2 cup buckwheat flakes
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • squirt agave
  • 2 tsp flax
  • 2 tsp hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp almond butter

For some reason buckwheat flakes don’t fill me up like oats but they’re so good and creamy so I’ll forgive them.

SNB13700

My baby bowl is too small to look outside.. :(

SNB13701

Poor thing! It’s totally missing out on the (2nd) arrival of spring!

Last night I went and had dinner with my besties from school. I can’t believe that I haven’t seen them since December!!! In case I have to remind you: It’s MARCH! That’s so shocking.. Where does the time go?

Anyway, we decided that this should never happen again and agreed to contact each other on the first day of each month to set a date.

We had an amazing time and had some good Italian food. I first wanted to order the big salad but salads usually disappoint me at restaurants so I had a small green salad for starters and then some linguine with pesto.

SNB13698

SNB13699

Yep the pine nuts were a bit burnt but they were good anyway. I always forget how good pine nuts are on pasta dishes!

I had the amazing almond and sesame tofu a week ago and couldn’t get that crunchiness out of my head!

SNB13703

I simply had to buy some for today’s lunch…

SNB13704

Those weird brown parts on the tofu are because of the microwave. Weird, I know. But check out those nutty/seedy bits inside the tofu! Love love love it!

Ever since work on Saturday I never really know what day it is.. This morning it took me a few seconds to figure out that it’s Wednesday. Sometimes I still think that it’s already Thursday. We didn’t even change the time over here and yet my brain is super confused. Wonder how confused it’ll be when I have to work on Saturday and Sunday in a week?!?

Q: Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Nope we don’t. Well some pubs are but come on, we’re simply not Irish (which is too bad.. I would love to have such a funny accent!)

I Hate Food. Well, Not Really.

Posted in Dinner, Lunch, Running on March 16th, 2010 by Karin – 22 Comments

I had my very first non-boring run on the treadmill today. It was mainly because of “McLeod’s Daughters” that kept me distracted – oh how much I love silly TV!

On yesterday’s schedule was a 3m run and some strength training. However, I skipped the strength training (I honestly can’t stand going to the gym in the evening – there are just way too many people!) and “only” did the run.

I made up for the missed strength workout this morning and also ran the planned 4 miles.

So far so good. :)

For some reason I never manage to stay away from huge salads for long. We’re like magnets and are meant to be together.

SNB13695

They’re especially good with some balsamic vinegar, hummus and sesame & dried tomato paste. ;)

I’ve also been eating tons of 4-grain buckwheat cakes lately. They’re basically like rice cakes but with some additional buckwheat, corn, oat and wheat. SO GOOD! (Oh yeah and sorry, I once called them “waffles” because they’re called like that over here. So confusing! ;) )

I couldn’t get that Thai curry out of my head and needed something with red Thai curry paste for dinner last night.

I randomly threw together some veggies (broccoli, peas, cauliflower, spinach and carrot), added some minced quorn and cooked it all with 2.5 tbsp red Thai curry paste, a little bit of salt and 2 tbsp soy yogurt.

SNB13696

Oh this was so scrumptious! Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I cooked way too much and only ate about 1/2 of it. I had the rest for lunch today ;) (along with some leftover Thai curry from Sunday).

SNB13697

It’s so strange that I sometimes don’t eat Thai curry for months and then suddenly crave it every single day.

You know, us food bloggers often talk about foods that they love and great new super foods that everyone has to have but what about the food that we don’t like?

Here’s my “hate” list:

  • meat (no big surprise here)
  • brussel sprouts (haven’t had it since I was a kid though)
  • fruit / vanilla / chocolate / cinnamon tea (weird, I know!)
  • soda
  • Natto
  • shitake mushroom

..I think that’s all. I’ll let you know if there’s more :)

Q: Are there any foods that you don’t like? (Food allergies and intolerances not included)

One Day Weekend

Posted in Dinner, Lunch, Running, Snacks, Working Out on March 15th, 2010 by Karin – 20 Comments

1-day weekends are generally kind of lame. However, mine was really good.

I decided to skip the concert on Saturday because I felt like sleeping. Plus I had some laundry to do. Yawn.

In the end I made a banana dessert snack, watched some O.C. and went to bed at 10pm. :)

SNB13665

SNB13666

Yesterday we got up super early and went SNOWSHOEING again!! Friends, if you haven’t tried it yet: find some snow and give it a go! We don’t have any snow down here but it’s easy to get on a hill/mountain in little time.

SNB13670

The tour took us about 3 hours and was so lovely. The weather was really nice but got a bit cloudy in the afternoon. It didn’t damper our spirits though.

SNB13673

Sporting Ray Ban Wayfarers. Got to stomp around in style!

SNB13674

For lunch I packed some leftover omelette, lettuce and pesto rolls (from Saturday’s event) and some celery.

SNB13676

And also a sandwich (with spinach, tomato, hummus, sunflower seed pâté and pickles)

SNB13678

Unpictured snacks were dried fruit, nuts & chocolate.  :)

SNB13685

SNB13687

We had to wait for the bus a bit (when we were done snowshoeing of course) and we headed to the restaurant where Silvio had some ice cream and I some hot chocolate and a carrot cake. It was Sunday after all! ;)

The boyfriend craved Thai food for dinner so we bought a Thai veggies mix and other groceries and cooked a red Thai curry at my place. My sister joined the party too and it was such a fun dinner (it involved some wine and more ice cream too). ;)

SNB13691 ¨

SNB13692

We served it with some brown basmati rice.

It was an indulging day but that’s ok. Eats will be back to normal in no time :) .

You might have noticed that my March challenge is a complete FAIL! I’m really sorry about that but the week before last week I wanted to make something nice on the weekend but then I ended up being too busy worrying about everything and last week I simply had no time (or patience *cough*) to make a good Japanese dish.

Therefore I will postpone that challenge and try it again in April. Sorry guys, I promise I will stick with it next month.

To something different altogether: I’ll start training for a 10 miles race today! I wrote about it before and I am excited to start training even though I know that it’s going to be hard. My training schedule has changed a little bit (took yoga away because I do that anyway and added some cross training and an other strength session.

Please let me know if you want to read more about daily runs/workouts in my posts. If not, I’ll only write about them occasionally :) .

My sister’s plane takes off in a few minutes. She’ll spend one week in Amsterdam with a friend (lucky her!). I’ll miss her :(

How was your weekend?

Those Lazy Feet

Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Films on March 13th, 2010 by Karin – 12 Comments

Oh boy I am so exhausted! We just finished work and I can’t wait to go home and rest my feet. I made plans to go to a beneficial concert tonight but it already started (though the second band is set to play at 10pm) and I honestly don’t know if I can stand on my feet any longer.

Now, it might sound like I’m whining but it’s a good exhaustion. It was such a fun event and everything (well, almost everything) went very well. Since I’m still laptop-less I am writing this post on the work computer. Oh that dedication! ;)

Last night we just wanted to make a nice dinner and relax. We made some bulgur with arrabiata sauce and carrots, almond and sesame tofu, a salad and some soup on the side.

SNB13630

God was that heavenly! Especially the bulgur and the tofu! And the salad! And the soup! ;)

SNB13631

SNB13632

SNB13633

And then we felt like seeing a film. I know, I go to the cinema all the time but I just can’t say no to a film date night! ;) We saw “The Men Who Stare At Goats” which was hilarious! It’s definitely my kind of film and I really enjoyed seeing it.

This morning, before work, Silvio and I went on a nice and easy 1hr run. It’s so lovely to start the day being super refreshed! Post-run I was craving cereal big time..

Well, I mixed it with some apple/cinnamon granola because I felt like being uber-creative! ;)

SNB13634

And now I’ve got to run! Sorry that my post is so damn lame and short but I just wanted to pop in and say hi. I hope you’re all enjoying your weekend! Let me know what you did!

Il Ne Faut Pas Mentir

It was so much fun reading all your answers!

But guess what? YOU WERE ALL WRONG!!!!!

Here’s the truth:

  1. I studied in Australia for a year  (I wish!)
  2. I can juggle really well and even one a championship (Yeah, not that true either)
  3. My favourite drink is a Mojito  (I’m more of a wine and beer person but love the occasional drink with vodka)
  4. Friends called me opossum at school because I apparently look like one (TRUE!!! I have the most charming friends ever, don’t you think?)
  5. I once met Matt Bellamy (of Muse) in a Café in Italy and almost passed out  (I WISH!!!)
  6. When I was 16, I was extremely into Old Hollywood. All I ever wanted was to become like Rita Hayworth (Most of you guessed that one but it isn’t true. I LOVE Old Hollywood but I didn’t want to become like Rita Hayworth when I was 16 – I was too busy being into Ska Punk back then!)
  7. My family and I lived in a Caravan until we had to settle down when I was 5 and had to go to the Kindergarten. (Haha, yeah that would have been fun.)

Today’s such a good day. Even though I have to work tomorrow, I’m feeling happy and relaxed. Maybe it’s because of my kick ass pay raise??? It might also be because of the sunshine. It was very spring-like a week ago and then it got cold again. I can’t wait for warmer days!!

After squash last night we basically ran to the restaurant because we were starving! I was super hungry all day long but didn’t pack enough food. My bad.

Dinner was fantastic. I love my squash girls.

I started off with a small salad…

SNB13624

..and then had the gnocchi tricolore! Just look at these cute mini gnocchis! Aren’t they adorable?? ;)

SNB13625

After we finished chatting I headed back home, changed clothes, threw my squash stuff into a corner and went to my boyfriend’s place.

For breakfast I stole three small slices of the whole wheat baguette that they had and topped them with almond butter and bananas.

SNB13626

Check out how holey that bread it! I was basically eating air! ;)

SNB13627

I had a egg on the side too

SNB13628

I forgot to tell you all that I passed the Certificate of Advanced English!! You know, for some reason I thought that we wouldn’t be able to see the results online until March. I checked the letter a few days ago and realized that the date was 26 January. Oops. Oh well.

I love work but I also like learning things and am thinking about enrolling at a new course. I would love to start learning Swedish!

I might have asked that before but which languages do you speak?
Languages are so fascinating to me and I’m glad that I can speak Swiss-German, German, French, English and Japanese quite fluently but I would really like to be able to understand Swedish (because I think it’s the funniest language on earth).

Have a great Friday my friends!

Award, Lip Gloss, Soup.

The other day Gelareh of Nutritious Foodie awarded me with the “Creative Write” award. Thanks dear, I never wrote about it because it took me forever to think of the lies :) (Btw: did you ever reveal your truth? Me thinks not! ;) )

liar

  1. I studied in Australia for a year
  2. I can juggle really well and even one a championship
  3. My favourite drink is a Mojito
  4. Friends called me opossum at school because I apparently look like one

  7. My family and I lived in a Caravan until we had to settle down when I was 5 and had to go to the Kindergarten.

Can you guess which one’s the truth? ;)

Nominating other bloggers.. Well, to be honest, I can’t remember who already got one or not but I’m going to nominate a few bloggers and hope that they haven’t received one yet.. But you know that I love you all, right?? ;)

  1. Coco of Balance, Joy and Delicias
  2. Christina of Health Foodie
  3. Karla of Foodologie
  4. Christina of Christina Butter
  5. Ildie of Rambling Babushka
  6. Tamzin of salad and sequins
  7. Caroline of Caroline Dines

The rules:

  1. Thank & link to the person who gave this to you.
  2. Copy the logo and place on your blog.
  3. Tell six outrageous lies about yourself and ONE outrageous truth.
  4. Nominate seven “Creative Writers” who you know will come up with some great lies.
  5. Post links to the seven nominees and let them know you nominated them.

Moving on..

I’m not a huge fan of lip gloss/balm but I bought this gem the other day… Can you guess why?

SNB13619

It’s called CUPCAKE!

SNB13620

Oh it’s so wonderful to be 8 years old! ;)

I really enjoyed “An Education” (British films make me happy) and would definitely recommend it to everyone (especially girls ;) ). Meeting Daniela was great too and we’ll probably see each other again on Tuesday. Growing up is sometimes really sad, especially when you don’t see your best friends as much as you used to anymore. I really need to put more effort into meeting everyone more often.
Well, not that I have that many friends but I want to be more in touch with the close ones that I have.

Is it just me or is it all getting more and more difficult with time?

After I got home from the cinema I saw that my sister has cooked some soup. Of course I had to have some for dinner (along with a fried egg and some toast).

She said that she used tons of veggies, coconut milk and some curry and other seasoning. I loved it! Soup is the best comfort food ever. And healthy too! :)

SNB13621

Well that’s it for photos.

I will go and have dinner with my pals after squash to celebrate my friend Karin’s birthday tonight, can’t wait!! Afterwards I’ll go to my boyfriend’s place (whom I haven’t seen since Monday. Sad times! ;) )

Q: What do you like best about your city/town/village? I really love that Bern is rather small and super charming. Plus the people are extremely laid back (though other Swiss people who aren’t from Bern often claim that we are slow – as in slow talkers. Why do they say it like it’s a bad thing? ;) ).

Q2: What’s your favourite city? Mine is definitely London. I feel rather at home there because of the accent, chaos, music, theatre plays, TopShop, Whole Foods and the Jivamukti Yoga studio, hehe. My pal Christine will go to Oxford for a few months on Saturday and I’m thinking about visiting London with her for a couple of days in May. Easyjet flights are super cheap (as well as the £!!) and I have to work on a couple of Saturdays this month and with all that overtime I could easily take a few days off. I really hope this works out.

Now that I’m thinking about it.. It’s going to be one hell of a travelling year! Hooray!

A Day Of Eats And No Internet

Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Films, Lunch, Snacks, Yoga on March 10th, 2010 by Karin – 17 Comments

It’s official: Technology hates me. Yesterday I was all excited about blogging from home because my sister bought this super cool laptop off her boyfriend and I thought that setting up the internet was easy peasy. Well, I was wrong.

I tried to be all zen about it but I was swearing up a storm on the inside. In the end I gave up and did  lunar flow yoga à la Shiva Rea. 1 hour 13 minutes later I was a relaxed person again ;) .

(Though I was secretly still a bit pissed that things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to.) ;)

SNB13607

Sorry that I’m being such a horrible blogger. :(

On an other note: Thank you for all the lovely comments! You are the kindest people on earth :) . Things are back to normal and I’m somehow glad that this happened. Is that weird? “Bad” experiences always remind me to live my life at the fullest – which includes fun times, as well as solving problems and dealing with issues. Only this will prevent me from getting stuck. I never want to stop learning new things – no matter how big or small they are. The thought of becoming a grumpy, narrow-minded grandma scares the hell out of me.

Anyway. Yesterday I wanted to write a good old traditional food blogger post and show you every little thing I ate. Too bad that the laptop was on strike. Do you mind seeing everything today? I hope not ;)

I decided to go to the gym first thing in the morning because I did no strength training last week. (Cough). I grabbed a almond butter & fruit spread whole rice waffle on the way out.

SNB13585

The entire workout took me 1h 15 min (10 minutes on the cross trainer & 5 minutes of stretching included) and afterwards I had a hard boiled egg & a shake.

SNB13586

Behold.. The prettiest shake EVER:

SNB13587

I was out of non-dairy milk so I used regular 2% milk and protein powder.

Afterwards I headed to the health food store because I still had some time before work. I was in the mood for some earthy teas and so I bought some rooibos and pu erh tea.

SNB13588

SNB13589

My tea stashes at work and home are getting out of control.. but I like variety!

Mid morning I snacked on a banana that looked super beaten up.

SNB13590

Lunch was a fabulous salad and some black sesame crackers & a hard boiled egg

SNB13594

SNB13591

And then I ate more crackers. They’re incredibly addictive and I have no will power at all.

Work was good and busy and I managed to get a lot done.

At one point I had some apple and peanut butter.

SNB13596

After work I basically flew back home because I was starving. I had some tomme and edamer cheese while I was washing the dishes.

For dinner I was craving breakfast. Porridge, to be precise. However, I wanted to use the buckwheat flakes instead of oats that I got from the health food store in the morning.

SNB13598

The porridge turned out to be bran-like and I loved it!

SNB13599

Of course I couldn’t miss the usual toppings..

SNB13600

For some reason I was still hungry afterwards and so I also had a piece of toast with vegan margarine and some chocolate.

SNB13601

I skipped pilates because of the computer troubles but it was good to get some yoga in. I love lunar flow yoga and the one of Shiva Rea’s Yoga Shakti DVD is so relaxing. Shiva Rea’s classes need some getting used to at first (if you’re not very used to creative movements and “letting go”) but I like them. I haven’t done any yoga with DVDs in ages but today I dug out an other yoga DVD of Shiva (Creative Core Abs) and flowed for 35 minutes :) . Today isn’t going to be much of a work-out day but it was good to get some yoga in.

Oh I almost forgot.. I also made some protein bars à la Averie last night! I changed the recipe a bit because I had to work with what I had on hand.. (No major changes though. Only dates/apricots instead of raisins and no chocolate chips…). Check out her blog for the recipe :) .

SNB13603

SNB13616

I just had one and I highly recommend them. :)

Xanthan and Guar Gum seems to be quite popular in the blog world but I knew that there was no way we could get them over here. We’re lucky enough to have goji berries and hemp seeds!! ;) It was a huge surprise when I saw Guar Gum at the health food store yesterday..

SNB13618

Of course I had to use it for breakfast. I’ve never made smoothie in a bowl before and so I knew that I had to make some for today’s breakfast.

In the blender went:

  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
  • approximately 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 tsp guar gum

Tadaaaaa…

SNB13617

I can’t believe that it made such a difference!! It was like eating a runny mousse ;) . Unfortunately I couldn’t finish it all – it was way too much.

But now that I’ve tried it with guar gum I wonder what a difference some added xanthan gum would make…

Tonight I’ll meet up with my friend Daniela and we will go and see “An Education”. I adore Nick Hornby books and I’m looking forward to seeing the film. God, there are so many great films at the cinemas right now.. I also can’t wait to see “The Men Who Stare At Goats” – Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor are such cool dudes ;) .

Q: Have you seen a good film lately that you can recommend? The last film I saw was “A Single Man” which I really liked. I was a bit sceptical at first because Tom Ford (yep, the former fashion designer) is the director but the film was beautiful and very artistic. Colin Firth was also fantastic in it and he truly deserved his Oscar nomination.

Q2: Have you tried xanthan / guar gum? And to those who did: what exactly does xanthan do to the smoothie? I only see bloggers using both guar gum and xanthan gum but I wonder if that’s “necessary”.

Life.

Sometimes life shakes you around with great force, pushes you off a cliff and makes you stand up again. Without going into details, this is exactly what happened this weekend. I felt broken and helpless but things turned around yesterday and life is good again.

Even though moments like these are really hard, they make us grow as persons. I am thankful for times like these because they make me appreciate even more how lucky I am.

Needless to say that there was no room for blogging, I hope you’ll forgive me. :)

On a much brighter note: I tried the whole “I feel bad so I’m allowed to eat ice cream” thing and even though I love ice cream it didn’t really feel that special. Or comforting. It was more like a "oh, that’s what other people do when they feel down”-moment. You know, carrots would have given me the same amount of satisfaction. ;)

There was food though! No bad mood can kill my appetite. I’m primitive ;) .

SNB13570

Sautéed veggies with 1 egg mixed in

SNB13571

Sweet potato with cinnamon

SNB13572

Bread with almond butter, banana slices and a tad bit of agave

SNB13573

Lärabar love

SNB13574

SNB13575

SNB13577

And then last night my boyfriend and I made some roasted veggies..

SNB13582

..and homemade whole wheat “Spätzli” with saffron cream sauce. I never make cream sauces though yesterday I felt like being a bit rebellious ;) .

SNB13584

You know, I don’t really care if there was a bit too much ice cream and beer involved this weekend. Sure it wasn’t the healthiest food but I was ok with it. It has also taught me that, in every possible situation, I’d rather have some veggies than anything else. ;)

Q: How do you handle depressing days? I always go from feeling that everything’s going to be fine to crying. But I generally think that it takes a lot to make me feel like there’s never going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I will always know that things will get better someday (because they will!). However, a nice cry every once in a while doesn’t do any harm.

Ps. Did you watch the Oscars? Well I didn’t because they show them at an ungodly hour but I’m so happy that Christoph Waltz won the Best Supporting Actor award! I would have been super mad if he didn’t get it because his performance in “Inglourious Basterds” was fantastic. Extremely horrifying but fantastic.

Pps: My google reader is on 615. Guess who’s got some catching up to do?

Is The Quiche To Blame?

Posted in Dinner, Sweets on March 4th, 2010 by Karin – 19 Comments

Such great comments on my last post! I’m really happy that you’re excited for my trip too ;) . I hope there are going to be a bunch of blogger meet-ups. On the other hand, I really hope that my friend won’t be annoyed or thinks it’s strange because let’s face it: Meeting someone you only know through the internet is kind of like a blind date. And weird. BUT FUN! I can’t wait! ;)
Maybe we’ll set a date and you’ll see me waiting and then you’ll run away screaming because of my horrible black teeth. Or my missing eye.
Kidding.
But let’s get back to being serious. It might be strange for someone who’s not familiar with this crazy and wonderful blog world. We’re like nerdy boys who talk about videogames with their friends online. The only difference is that we talk about food.

Anyway. I just wanted to inform you that Swiss bloggers are slowly but surely taking over the food blog world. MUAHAHAHAHAHA. Yesterday the lovely Christina commented on my blog (hi there fellow Swiss pal!) and of course I had to check out her blog too. Well obviously, the layout is way too great to be true but there are also a bunch of amazing posts. You should all go and read her most recent one “Good Food vs. Bad Food”.
Watch out guys! The mountain people from the tiny European country are here to take over the woooooorld. (Can you hear the menace in my voice??) ;)

Oh god. Wait one second. Do I see snowflakes? NOOOO! I thought it was getting spring already! Where did it go? Dear little snowflakes, you can party in the mountains but not down here!

Ok. Back to food.

Wednesdays usually bring running (or swimming) + dinner dates with my boyfriend. After a quick run around my neighbourhood, Silvio pulled out a recipe for a pear & potato quiche.

It basically consisted of pear, potato, cottage cheese, gruyere cheese, parsley, nutmeg, salt, pepper, garlic and onion. We also used a white organic pre-made dough.

After 30 minutes in the oven it looked like this:

I had some with a mixed salad that my sister made.

It was good but I woke up this morning with a HUGE tummy ache. I don’t know if it was because of the quiche but I don’t think that I will make it again soon.

But I really liked the sweet note of the pear. However, the crush/potato mix was a bit too much.

We had a good evening anyway. While the quiche was in the oven my boyfriend and I made some raw vegan chocolate chip cookie dough balls à la Averie. These are always too good to be true and my boyf is obsessed with them. I get so mad when he eats more dough than makes balls. ;) Yesterday was no different. It took all my strength to keep him away from snacking (I was –again- arguing like an old woman but this is serious stuff we’re talking about! ;) ).
But just look at the balls:

Can you tell which ones he made?? ;)

We also made a second batch to fulfil our needs.

I love me some balls. (TWWS!)

By the way, have you ever thought that your oven was lame? Well, I can almost guarantee you that mine is 1048384 times worse:

Yes it doesn’t really close properly. What a waste of energy but we don’t know how it can get fixed (any ideas?).

Plus: it’s tiny.

But despite it’s size and obvious flaws, it produces some really good stuff ;)

Q: Do you have any food intolerances or can’t mix certain foods? I once got a super swollen throat and lips because of pistachios. I’ve stayed away from them since then. I also get an upset tummy when I mix fruit + yogurt for example (took me a while to figure that out).

Oh wait, there’s no snow anymore. *K breathes out a sigh of relief*
Happy Thursday! Can’t believe that it’s already Friday so soon!
