Confused K + Workout Fuel

Hello my dear foodie friends! I am at work (got to stay until 9pm – oh the excitement!) and am currently taking a break to eat dinner. Nom nom.

You know, it’s actually incredibly amusing to train for a 10 miles race with the boyfriend. You get to send funny texts to each other like: “Oh god! There are going to be longer speedwork sessions! I think I’ve got to vomit”. Oh the shared passion between two lovebirds…

;)

After 5,5 hours of sleep it was surprisingly easy to get up this morning. What’s up with that? I always feel groggy when I get 7 hours of sleep. Sleep is such a mystery to me (but still one of my very favourite hobbies ;) ).

I went to the gym bright and early, did my full body workout (doesn’t that sound fierce?) and ran 2 miles.

Pre / post workout fuel

I usually eat two dates before an early morning workout (I can tell the difference if I don’t). I used to have them with almond butter all the time but my nut butter consumption is slowly getting out of control so I’m trying to reduce it a bit. Plain dates do the trick though. Post-workout I make sure to get in some good protein and carbs and lately tend to rely on my protein bars because they don’t require any prepping time. I have smoothies when I’m less stressed and I sometimes have an egg too.

What is your favourite pre/post workout fuel? Do you even pay attention to pre/post workout food?

My “real” breakfast was muesli with soy yogurt, 1/2 banana and frozen blueberries.

Frozen blueberries look so adorable when they sort of melt into the muesli..

Those 4-grain cakes with buckwheat are addictive! I can’t stop eating them. :) I had two of them for lunch (one with some sunflower seed paté that doesn’t look very pretty) and for dessert the other 1/2 of the banana and some peanut butter.

God I must be boring you with my salads but I can’t help myself.. I LOVE them!

This bowl had:

  • about 3 cups of spinach
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 carrot
  • some almond & sesame tofu
  • sunflower seed paté
  • balsamic vinegar
  • pepper

So good!

There are some great recipes in this month’s German Yoga Journal that I can’t wait to try. For those of you who are wondering: Yes I still practice yoga as regularly as possible (I try to hit the mat at least 5 times a week) but it’s taken a backseat now with all that running.. There’s just too little time. :( However, I still make sure to get some yoga time in. I would go nuts without it!

To be honest, I’ve been feeling sort of.. weird.. lately. I have WAY too many things on my plate but don’t know how I could possibly change that. The thing is, I’m not stressed out (it really takes a lot to stress me). It’s just a very weird feeling that is hard to describe. And I guess you could say that I’m a bit confused. I’m constantly running around (literally too! ;) )  and it feels like my whole self can’t keep up with that pace. I’m so glad for yoga and for some rare me-time that keeps me grounded and calm. Sure, there are a lot of things that I do that I don’t have to do (like training for a race for example) but things like these keep me sane. Maybe all these things that keep me sane are together a bit overwhelming?!? I’m sorry.. I’m rambling!

Have you ever felt like this too?

ps: As you see, I’m back to the normal 12 pt font. Which size do you like better? I’m still not sure.. (Again: Sorry! I seem to be kind of confusing tonight. Must be all that work! Oh and thinking about it.. Got to get back to it! :) )

ahahha.. i love that you described the blueberries as “adorable”. spoken like a true foodie!! maybe i can get marshall to train for a race with me, i am jealous of those texts. hang in there, i think the best word is “overwhelmed” for sure!

  2. I’ve definitely felt that feeling of being completely overwhelmed, but not necessarily “stressed out” before. Take lots of deep breaths!!!!

I usually eat a half a banana with pb before a workout. But I think mainly that’s just because I want an excuse to eat banana + pb, not because I need the fuel :-)

  3. I am overwhelmed and border line stressed. Somehow I got way too much on my plate and I am ready to unload some.

  4. Tamizn says:

I always have an egg before an early morning workout, it definitely keeps me going! I like the size of your font in this post I can read it much better, god I must be getting old! ha ha x x

  5. kilax says:

I didn’t even notice the font until I got here – it all looks the same in reader ;)

I feel that way too – running around like crazy! I just have to hope that I will eventually get some time to CHILL!!!

I like oatmeal for pre-run fuel and crackers and PB for afterward! And a homemade granola bar for during.

My husband and I are training for a half, and I told him that “these aren’t really intervals unless you feel like you are going to throw up!” when we were running them :) I like having him to share things with.

  6. I try to go to the gym 2.5-3 hours after I’ve eaten because I get cramps very very easily….. I don’t work out first thing in the morning but if I did then I probably wouldn’t eat anything.

Your breakfast looks so so yummy!!

  7. Stef says:

sorry you’ve been feeling a bit confused, i hope you feel more grounded soon! you and the bf are too cute. dates = great workout fuel, though i’ve gotta have mine with nut butter :)

  8. Pre-workout food is so key for a good workout. One time, in an effort to burn more calories,I didn’t eat anything before. I TRIPPED on the treadmill because I was so dizzy. And no one helped me…scraped knees are embarrassing but falling on a treadmill is so sad! I like to eat 1/2 a banana with some almond butter. I realized if I eat bread I get gassy (TMI?!?).
I’ve heard other bloggers eating dates+almond butter (like stef!) so I’m going to try that. And you’re definitely not boring me with your salads because they look delicious :)
AND i’m so jealous you don’t get stressed. When I do I seriously get like..digestion problems. Bad news all around!

  9. I can’t do any exercise at the moment, but I can’t wait to start! The idea of properly fueling pre/post workout is one that really interests me, so I’m doing a bit of research…

I can completely relate to the weird feeling you’re describing, the only difference is that I do tend to get stressed out really easily, which is usually what brings the weird feeling on. Hope you feel better soon, love!

  10. Ildie says:

That Almond & Sesame tofu looks SO good. I wonder if I can find that or something like that around here?

I wouldn’t worry about feeling “off”. I feel like that almost every single day of my life. I complain about having too much to do, and then I turn right around and complain about having nothing to do and being bored. I just make no damn sense I tell you. :)

  11. coco says:

it happens to everyone from time to time that you feel too many things going on and have no time to just be and reflect. Personally when that happen, I take back or pause and analyze the situation rationally. Am i doing everything I really need/want to do? how can I simplify if that would make my life easy? because it’s so important to have time to connect with ourselves.. you know what i mean? time to communicate with our inner soul. :)

  12. Nicole, RD says:

Blueberries are adorable! They’re all so perfectly formed. You never see a dud!

It’s great that you and your boyfriend are training together — that’ll definitely help the training to be fun!

It’s always the day after the brief sleep that gets me!

    Have a good weekend!

  13. Kat says:

I think that feeling is normal when you are in overdrive. Your mind and body probably both want a little less to work in their optimum way.
Try cutting out a few things a week, and instead, read a magazine in a bubble bath, or listen to music and read, or just watch some good TV. You need it!!
