A Day Of Eats And No Internet
It’s official: Technology hates me. Yesterday I was all excited about blogging from home because my sister bought this super cool laptop off her boyfriend and I thought that setting up the internet was easy peasy. Well, I was wrong.
I tried to be all zen about it but I was swearing up a storm on the inside. In the end I gave up and did lunar flow yoga à la Shiva Rea. 1 hour 13 minutes later I was a relaxed person again
.
(Though I was secretly still a bit pissed that things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to.)
Sorry that I’m being such a horrible blogger.
On an other note: Thank you for all the lovely comments! You are the kindest people on earth
. Things are back to normal and I’m somehow glad that this happened. Is that weird? “Bad” experiences always remind me to live my life at the fullest – which includes fun times, as well as solving problems and dealing with issues. Only this will prevent me from getting stuck. I never want to stop learning new things – no matter how big or small they are. The thought of becoming a grumpy, narrow-minded grandma scares the hell out of me.
Anyway. Yesterday I wanted to write a good old traditional food blogger post and show you every little thing I ate. Too bad that the laptop was on strike. Do you mind seeing everything today? I hope not
I decided to go to the gym first thing in the morning because I did no strength training last week. (Cough). I grabbed a almond butter & fruit spread whole rice waffle on the way out.
The entire workout took me 1h 15 min (10 minutes on the cross trainer & 5 minutes of stretching included) and afterwards I had a hard boiled egg & a shake.
Behold.. The prettiest shake EVER:
I was out of non-dairy milk so I used regular 2% milk and protein powder.
Afterwards I headed to the health food store because I still had some time before work. I was in the mood for some earthy teas and so I bought some rooibos and pu erh tea.
My tea stashes at work and home are getting out of control.. but I like variety!
Mid morning I snacked on a banana that looked super beaten up.
Lunch was a fabulous salad and some black sesame crackers & a hard boiled egg
And then I ate more crackers. They’re incredibly addictive and I have no will power at all.
Work was good and busy and I managed to get a lot done.
At one point I had some apple and peanut butter.
After work I basically flew back home because I was starving. I had some tomme and edamer cheese while I was washing the dishes.
For dinner I was craving breakfast. Porridge, to be precise. However, I wanted to use the buckwheat flakes instead of oats that I got from the health food store in the morning.
The porridge turned out to be bran-like and I loved it!
Of course I couldn’t miss the usual toppings..
For some reason I was still hungry afterwards and so I also had a piece of toast with vegan margarine and some chocolate.
I skipped pilates because of the computer troubles but it was good to get some yoga in. I love lunar flow yoga and the one of Shiva Rea’s Yoga Shakti DVD is so relaxing. Shiva Rea’s classes need some getting used to at first (if you’re not very used to creative movements and “letting go”) but I like them. I haven’t done any yoga with DVDs in ages but today I dug out an other yoga DVD of Shiva (Creative Core Abs) and flowed for 35 minutes
. Today isn’t going to be much of a work-out day but it was good to get some yoga in.
Oh I almost forgot.. I also made some protein bars à la Averie last night! I changed the recipe a bit because I had to work with what I had on hand.. (No major changes though. Only dates/apricots instead of raisins and no chocolate chips…). Check out her blog for the recipe
.
I just had one and I highly recommend them.
Xanthan and Guar Gum seems to be quite popular in the blog world but I knew that there was no way we could get them over here. We’re lucky enough to have goji berries and hemp seeds!!
It was a huge surprise when I saw Guar Gum at the health food store yesterday..
Of course I had to use it for breakfast. I’ve never made smoothie in a bowl before and so I knew that I had to make some for today’s breakfast.
In the blender went:
- 1 cup soy milk
- 1 banana
- 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
- approximately 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 tsp guar gum
Tadaaaaa…
I can’t believe that it made such a difference!! It was like eating a runny mousse
. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish it all – it was way too much.
But now that I’ve tried it with guar gum I wonder what a difference some added xanthan gum would make…
Tonight I’ll meet up with my friend Daniela and we will go and see “An Education”. I adore Nick Hornby books and I’m looking forward to seeing the film. God, there are so many great films at the cinemas right now.. I also can’t wait to see “The Men Who Stare At Goats” – Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor are such cool dudes
.
Q: Have you seen a good film lately that you can recommend? The last film I saw was “A Single Man” which I really liked. I was a bit sceptical at first because Tom Ford (yep, the former fashion designer) is the director but the film was beautiful and very artistic. Colin Firth was also fantastic in it and he truly deserved his Oscar nomination.
Q2: Have you tried xanthan / guar gum? And to those who did: what exactly does xanthan do to the smoothie? I only see bloggers using both guar gum and xanthan gum but I wonder if that’s “necessary”.

you’re so cute in the first picture! sorry that internet hasn’t been friendly to you lately! hopefully it will change soon.
you drink Pu er? do you like it? it’s such a great tea but too strong for my taste.
Guar gum? sounds great! I’ve seen it around blog world to make shakes.. i really want to try that if it’s not so expensive. I’d love to know if you can use it for other things too.
An Education. it’s a good movie, I saw it last week and liked it. Movies to recommend? first, the secret of your eyes (the winning foreign film from Argentina), then Invictus… personally I think Morgan Friedman should have won the oscar with that film, it’s great!
Yes I love pu erh tea even though it tastes a bit like dirt
It’s weird that I like teas like these and hate the ones that are fruity.
Good to hear that you liked “An Education”. I love foreign films and would love to see “the secret of your eyes”… “Invictus”! Yes that one is on my list too.
I really want to see An Education! It looks good! Since the Oscards just happened, I’m wanting to see all the movies nominated, especially the winners. I did really like the Blind Side. Though Sandra Bullock was hilarious and amazing all at once!
I haven’t tried “the gums.” Here they’re super expensive (not sure if they are there). An 8oz bag (I think) costs about $12, which is a little more than I want to pay for something I’m not sure I’ll like. Oh well. maybe someday when I’m rich and famous… (or just break down and shell out the dough for it…)
Oh my GAWD…my personal idea of hell would be a room where day after day, I have to set up the internet by myself
Looks like great eats!
Hey Karin
Here’s one of your Swiss readers! I’ll write in English though so that other people don’t think we’ve developed some kind of strange language
I’m glad everything’s better again!
Speaking of things we cannot get here, do you knoww if chia seeds are available in Switzerland? I see them all the time on other blogs!
Oh and the last movie I saw was Up in the Air, it was great!
I once found chia seeds but I think they’re for planting or something because a few grams only were 7.- (which is almost like $7 to you non-Swiss people out there
).
I loved Up in the Air too!
Ohhhh I CANNOT deal with technology issues. If things don’t work the way they’re supposed to, I go crazy! But at least you had some delicious eats to make things better
I have a ridiculous stash of tea as well, so don’t feel bad…
I haven’t tried any of the gums yet, but I think I’m going to have to. Sometimes I feel like having a smoothie but don’t want it to be so runny, so if the gums thicken it right up, I’m all over that. I’m really curious what the addition of both of them does though… maybe one is enough?
I’ve been addicted to buying teas lately too. It’s good though because I’m only in the mood for certain teas at certain times! Those tea boxes you got are so pretty
I can’t find Xanthan gum here either. I need to take a trip to a health food store soon!
I’m also guilty of having an out of control tea stash. I really need to stop buying more and work on finishing some of the almost empty boxes in my cupboard!!
I’ve used xanthan gum in a smoothie but I also had put a bunch of other things in there that I hadn’t used before so I don’t know exactly how the xanthan gum changed it….. It was good and thick though!!
p.s. I love how you tried to be all “zen” with the internet problems! So funny, I do the same thing
Thanks for making my bars and for linking back…you’re awesome! No, what’s more awesome is how they look like they turned out
Job well done!
And computer issues have been my middle name lately with my commenting system, google reader uploading, you name it..but today fingers crossed, Im safe
xoxo
Computers are the devil. Sorry to hear about your never ending technology woes.
Your eats looks amazing as usual though. I guess you can take the good with the bad eh?
I’ve used both guar and xanthan gum, separately and together. When just using one, I think the consistency is the same. When you combine them, it becomes even more thick and “soft” pudding like. I haven’t used them in a while because they made my shakes so THICK I could never finish them. I need my protein so I’m taking a “thickening” break.
Wow, lots of good food here! I love nearly rotten bananas and freeze them in that form for soft serve ice cream. The protein bars look good.
I recently saw The Crazies and recommend it, creepy, scary and fun.
i’m intimidated by xanthan/guar gum! lol rice waffle is such a great name for rice cake, which is what i call them. i think i’ll switch!
no movies and i haven’t used that gum..boo! but your eats look amazing- i just bought some rice cakes so i’m going to have to try that delicious combo! you’re so cute
haha
YES! the gums are the best! let me know if youd like me to send you some xantham. id be happy to.
Great to learn more about you… That cupcake is so cute and that soup looks very appetizing
Cheers,
Rosa
