Challenging March
Morning pals! Please excuse my absence yesterday. My laptop is still dead (though it might get fixed today, hooray!) and I had to work through lunch break. Fun times, I can tell you.
At least I managed to catch up with a few blogs though my google reader is still on +400. Le sigh.
Anyway, let’s back up a little. Despite the fact that yesterday was super busy and a MONDAY, I had a good time. Don’t know why.. Some days are just good. Maybe it’s because it’s March? I seriously can’t believe that it’s already March. Time flies, doesn’t it?
Some bloggers asked about March challenges and I didn’t plan anything… until I saw soba noodles on Coco’s blog.
Now here’s a confession: Despite the fact that I’m 1/2 Japanese and speak it every day due to my job I hardly know anything about this country! First of all: I’ve only made sushi once. With my mum. Sure, I’ve made instant ramen (pre-veggie times) but who can’t boil instant noodles? And secondly I’m not very familiar with traditions and customs. They weren’t very important to my mum (she’s kind of a punk, hehe) and we never learned much about them. So my March challenge is going to be like this:
I’ll cook at least one (vegetarian) Japanese meal per week.
There are so many recipes that call for fish sauce and I’ll make some vegetarian variations of these recipes. I seriously miss ramen but to be honest: I could have made my own version ages ago! I think that also falls into the “I should try this and that recipe but don’t have enough time"-category.
Anyway, this is going to be a fun challenge. I hope you don’t mind my increased rambling about Japan but I realize more and more how important it is to know your roots. As a kid I was always embarrassed because other children teased me and asked me if my mum slaughters whales too.. I just wanted to be normal. It’s funny how we try to be(come) “special” when we grow up though.
Back to food!!
I fell in love with the Thrive recipes. They simple and with ingredients that aren’t too exotic. Basically it’s all I want from a good recipe. After the first round of goodies I made more Thrive-food.
First up the vegetable crackers.
It took me some time to make them because my food processor was way too small.
But after some work I got a nice mixture that I spread onto a baking sheet and baked as advised.
They turned out FABULOUS! Seriously, I never thought that they would be that good.
I also made some sunflower seed pâté to go with it.
It doesn’t look tasty at all but it’s so good (again a bit crunchy because of my lame mini-processor). I love the garlic flavour!
+ This morning I also made some tomato basil salad dressing.
While I was making the crackers and pâté, Selina made some gnocchi and tofu that she got from the organic food store.
We served it with some crunchy celery.
Loved the gnocchi! They tasted very authentic and worked well with the rosso tofu.
Afterwards we watched the first few episodes of season 1 of The O.C.! Did you watch the show too? It was so hilarious to see the old episodes. My sister and I always have the biggest party when we watch TV shows together and yesterday wasn’t any different. We commented on every single silly line and sang along to the theme song (“Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa here we cooooooooome”).
Ah, I love nights like these.
Today I cooked some oats and made some salad sauce (you’ve got to use every second of your free time
) + a sandwich for lunch.
It included sunflower seed pâté, spinach, yellow bell pepper and 1 hard boiled egg. Can’t wait to take a bite.
Q: Do you have any challenge planned for March?

oh girl I love your challenge, it’s really important to know our roots (something that I didn’t think it’s necessary when i was younger) because it makes you understand more your people, your culture and even your family! And I’m excited to see your vegetarian japanese dishes, I’m a huge of japanese cuisine!
and those crackers? I’m impressed by your cooking skill. how did you make it? they look really crunchy!!!
So true!!
The recipe’s from Thrive which is why I can’t post it but it’s basically a bunch of flax, celery, tomato, carrot, cumin, almonds.. and what else? oh salt too.. and I’m pretty sure that I forgot something..
I watched the first episode of the OC yesterday too!!! lol
Check it out– great minds think alike: http://newlywednewlyveg.com/2010/03/01/californiacaliforniahere-we-commmmmme/
I hope your laptop gets fixed today!!!
I think that’s a great challenge! Can’t wait to see what you’ll make!
I rarely make Guatemalan food even though my mom made it all the time growing up.
I don’t have a March challenge officially but I have no in mind!
Your eats always make me drool. Come make me dinner. HURRY!
I was 7 when I left Hungary and naturally grew up eating my Mama’s authentic Hungarian cooking. I never cook it though, except for a FEW “healthified” dishes. Hungarians are NOT known for eating healthy. My Mama deep fries and batters everything or cooks it in a thick, rich sauce involving butter and paprika. They also LOVE starchy carbs and cooking with lard. Need I say more?
Authentic Hungarian food is delicious but I try and stay away from it. My ass will thank me later.
Side note Birthday ramble: Plans on Saturday include Sushi for lunch, a visit to my fave Winery and then “possibly” dancing later. Honestly I’m just sort of going with the flow though.
ahh omg i bought some tofu and gnocchi yesterday and was looking for a way to have it!
aha xx
lifesaverr
Karin, I think that’s a great goal for March! I love being in touch with my roots. My parents immigrated to Canada from Poland before I was born, so they raised me with all the traditions of the “home land”. I really do think that culture makes life richer
Good luck with your challenge!
My goal this month is to smile at myself when I look in the mirror. Simple, but proving very effective thus far.
Everything looks delicious, that sandwich looks like mine kind of sandwich: like it!
Have a great day girl:)

OOOH love the Bun on your sandwich…
I have never watched OC.
I didn’t make a challenge for my March.. but my goal is to keep to my schedule.. my calendar is jam packed.
the crackers look PERFECT! I need to try to find the recipe/baking time. I do have a dehyd but honestly sometimes it just takes toooo long…who has 18 hrs to make crackers
Yours look amazing!
Goals for the month
less computer
more life
ooh those veggie crackers look wonderful! OMG so mean about what those kids used to say to you! i love being half asian, go hapas!
I love your challenge! I can’t wait to see the results…and Japanese food is not just limited to sushi, of course! Please try ramen! And their omelettes! And the simplest meal ever: salmon on top of rice with other leftovers, pour green tea over! I actually have an un-authentic recipe on my blog, hee hee.
That is so neat that you speak Japanese!!!
March…hmm. I think my biggest challenge will be time management and making time for me. Everything is going to be so busy this month and I am traveling a lot for work and pleasure. I just need to stay organized and get enough sleep (pssst, self!! get off the computer NOW!) : )
Those crackers look so good! I don’t have a challenge for March yet but I need to think of one. Setting goals for yourself is such a good thing! Great blog!!
Wow, lucky you! I’d love to visit the US…
Great gifts and lovely food!
Cheers from your Swiss neighbor,
Rosa
Ohmygosh I live in San Francisco (or around the area)! I love California and hope you will too and if you want I would love to show you around my side of the bay. The funny thing is, I just stumbled onto your blog and notice you are from Switzerland. I just went to Switzerland this summer to work in Ftan in Graubunden! I also went to Lucerne and Zurich. I love raclette! And nustortte. I think that’s how you spell it.
What a fun challenge! We don’t have a challenge for March, but want to do a whole foods challenge soon. We are still preparing, recipe-wise (the goal is to not eat anything processed).
Those crackers look so tasty!
