Salads. Not Diets.

Hey guys!

So yesterday I decided to go to yoga despite my super sore legs which turned out to be a good idea. My teacher was away and an other taught her class. Now, I said it was a good idea because she teaches Ashtanga yoga which means lots of crazy arm poses that reminded me of break dancing. It was super fun even though I couldn’t manage to do the difficult poses. I like getting better and seeing improvements in my practice which is why I like poses that seem completely impossible.

Anyway, I got back home, showered and had dinner and ran out of the house again to meet my friends for a drink. I ended up being the only one who drank water but I just wasn’t in a beer or wine mood yesterday.

But let’s quickly back up a little.. Oh no, wait! Before I get to breakfast: Some of you have asked what quark is. Well wikipedia knows it all gives us the answer. Quark is actually also called curd cheese and even though it’s considered as cheese it reminds me more of greek yogurt.

Breakfast was stellar. Seriously that hemp-nola is SO good! It’s worth buying the book only for this recipe, I swear!

Work was a bit slow yesterday and for lunch we all went to that local restaurant where I had a huge salad because the veggie option (veggie pie) didn’t really appeal to me. My colleagues asked me if I were on a diet. (???) Why do people always assume that you’re on a diet when you “only” eat a salad for lunch? Have people asked you the diet question as well because you stuck to lettuce?

My diet salad (ha!) kept me full until 4 PM but I knew that I had to eat something or otherwise I’d starve during yoga so I grabbed an apple and a hard boiled egg.

After my arms became jelly I headed home and only had one thing on my mind: Lentils! We ate a ton of lentils on our canoe trip in Sweden because they don’t go bad and are a great source of protein.

I simply cooked 1/2 cup of dry lentils (I almost wrote oats. Oops!) with 1 cup of water and some salt. I swerved it with fennel and broccoli that was topped with salt and cayenne pepper.

I forgot how much I missed fennel. Sigh. Apparently some people don’t like it. Silly. Oh and I missed lentils too. Sigh no. 2

Then I got Americanized and had a PB&J bread, two chocolate chip balls and a waffle biscuit thing that Selina bought and I had to try of course ;) .

Good dinner. Happy Karin.

I’m actually going to spend the entire weekend with my boyfriend. It’s going to be fun as we have a lot planned. Brunch, run, dinner at a restaurant to celebrate my aunt’s and uncle’s birthday and a house party at Selina’s boyfriend’s place today and bodypump tomorrow. Yes, bodypump. With the boyfriend. HA. It’s going to be hilarious.

Got to go and prepare brunch now! I see an other ED&BV recipe in the very near future! Have a great day you all! :)

Random Q of the day: Do you work out with your significant others? Yep I do. We go for a run / swim on Wednesdays but also sometimes work out on the weekends (mostly running). It’s fun to spend time together but get some activity in at the same time! :)

  1. Karla says:

People are silly! I think salads are just delicious, not necessarily diet food. Keep munchin’ the salad! They’re delicious!

I do not work out with my significant other. Firstly, we’re doing the long distance thing now. Secondly, I could never get him to exercise with me when we lived a block away from each other. Unless it’s walking, he doesn’t really do it. He used to walk me to the gym though :)

Have a great weekend! I have no plans but it’s the last weekend til the semester starts :( boo!

  2. My hub and I workout together…we take yoga and go to the gym together. But, we never run together outside (I go farther and faster than him), and he would NEVER come to a bodypump class with me– I bet he would die!! That’ll be so much fun! Have a great weekend, Karin!

  3. Kirsty says:

i use quark on the pitta pizza’s I make – i mix in two cloves of garlic minced – it is good and virtually no fat at all!!!xx

  4. Ildie says:

I get the “Ohhh, that looks healthy, are you on a diet?” question at work all the time. I usually tell them something like, I don’t like to consume fat, lard and names I can’t pronounce 24/7. This revelation tends to be followed by awkward gazes back and forth, followed by uncomfortable silence, followed by me walking away. :)

My Mr. likes to delegate and give opinions on things I should be doing or doing differently. You know, being the typical couch dwelling, professional nutritionist, physical trainer that he is. It’s really sort of fascinating. Not to mention amusing. HA! We never work out together and I don’t mind. I can only imagine how “informative” he would be actually being AT the gym.

  5. kilax says:

When I first met my husband, he did not think a salad could be a meal! But now he often eats salad. And people at work give me crap for it. I just want to take care of my body.

My husband and I run together from time to time (we’re running a half marathon on May 1) and do the 30 Day Shred and yoga together. I love how you notice subtle improvements in yoga! It’s so encouraging!

  6. janetha b says:

breakdancing yoga sounds fun :) ive never done a bit of yoga in my life! BUT today is national yoga day, i will have you know. fennel and lentils are two things i love but don’t eat nearly often enough. i should try to incorporate those into my life again! i have been to the gym with the boyf once. yes once. i did my thing he did his. he doesn’t ever go to the gym.. what a waste of $$ since he has a membership! have a great night over on your side of the world!

  7. Shelley says:

i love working out with my boyriend! and omg it is so dumb when people assume a salad= diet. like first of all, salads can have a lot of calories, second of all, i think salads taste good :)

  8. Steff says:

Oh, how I love thee, quark. The rest of the world is missing a LOT.

Also, Karin, thanks for getting back to me about the almond butter a while ago. I compiled a reply but my mail account sucks … in a nutshell: You did help me a lot! :-)

  9. Blandine says:

I usually don’t like lentils (true funny silly story: my (stupid) grandmother once said that when you eat lentils, then someone is going to die. Now think twice before you cook yourself lentils, kid. lol) but yours look really tasty.

  10. tra says:

i just get weird looks and comments about the food i eat (once i brought in a hard boiled egg, a scrambled 3 egg white omelette, and a 1/3rd a block of plain firm tofu. white xmas, seriously).

re: working out with my significant other.
i kinda don’t apply because i AIN”T GOT NO Significant other! WAY TO MAKE ME FEEL IMMENSELY LAME!
    i kid i kid. (i’m sarcastic, to a tee)
i think i would, but i wouldn’t do like some people in my gym do: do EVERYTHING together. my idea of going to the gym with someone is like entering and leaving together. =D
