Running Polenta

Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Running on January 30th, 2010 by Karin – 12 Comments

Polenta and I are back in love again. I used to make a polenta based ayurveda breakfast all the time a few years ago or so (I go through stages of favourite breakfasts… writing this reminds me that I have to make this breakfast again soon.. ;) ) but then things got a bit difficult. Polenta that bitch started to really hate me.

Anyway, yesterday we rekindled again. My secret bloggie twin, Karla, wrote about Italian eggs over polenta yesterday which was great because I had some leftover tomato sauce that I had to use.

SNB13247

(I forgot to stir in the spinach. Sigh. but it was good nevertheless)

SNB13248

SNB13249

And then I headed to the cinema. LOVED the film by the way.
+ Afterwards we went out for a couple of beers. Yay! It was a good night.

So I’ve got to tell you all about my news
…which aren’t really that exciting to be honest. ;)

My boyfriend and I worked on a training plan on Wednesday because we want to run the Grand Prix of Bern together! It’s a 10 miles race all around Bern and the course is so pretty but full of hills. Sigh. But to be honest I’m super hyped because last year I ran the race by myself and it’s so great to know that someone else is running it “with” me. My dad also agreed to join us which is fabulous!

I’ve never given much thought to races until last year. I was always the leisurely runner. And then I started reading food/health blogs and wanted to know what the buzz was all about. So I signed up for a 10 miles race even though I’ve only ran this far ONCE in my life. Needless to say that I wasn’t very well prepared but I still managed to knock it out in 1 hour 39 minutes. This year I want to improve my time of course. ;)

Even though these races were emotionally and physically the most interesting experiences I’ve ever had, I’m not addicted to races and would never consider myself a runner. Yeah, now you probably think “oh no.. an other blogger who runs races!” and you’re definitely right. But I just do that for myself. I’m also thinking about running a half marathon in summer but I’m not sure about that yet. Maybe I can persuade my dad to join me because he told me the other day that he’d like to run a marathon again. ;)

Ok, that was a lot rant but I might talk a little bit more about running on here so I need to give you a warning of sorts :) . Yes I know that there are tons of bloggers who run and write about it all the time so I think that yet an other blog about running isn’t needed. Therefore don’t fret: I’ll limit myself. ;)

With that being said…
I woke up today and craved one thing. PANCAKES!

SNB13250

I made some super simple, yet super delicious, vegan banana pancakes.

After a quick 2 miles run with my sister I decided to make some vegan banana muffins (am I on a “vegan+banana+everything” trip?). The recipe can be found on Gelareh’s blog. Her muffins looked so amazing – I just had to make them. I used whole wheat flour instead of white rice flour and completely forgot about the walnuts, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract (oops) but they turned out just fine.

SNB13251

In fact I already had three of them. They’re so good I couldn’t stop eating! ;)

SNB13252

I also whipped up a recipe of my own which I will post tomorrow. It’s a good one. ;)

I’m heading over to Silvio’s place in 10 minutes – we’ll make teriyaki stir-fry for dinner and then I’ll go back home because he wants to go out and I don’t. ;) I have so many great things planned for tomorrow and have to get up early.

Q: What’s your favourite thing to bake? I’m a muffins and cupcakes girl all the way. Well basically it’s because I hate making food for other people that I haven’t tried before. And eating a muffin isn’t as suspicious as trying a slice of a cake. ;)

Chocolate For Breakfast

Posted in Breakfast, Films, Running, Yoga on January 29th, 2010 by Karin – 16 Comments

Something extremely groundbreaking happened today.

…..

..

.

 I made different oats!!! Seriously. I’m not kidding. I know it’s a shock to you all.

This morning I got up super bright and early and rushed back home (stayed the night at the boyfriend’s), changed clothes, yadda yadda and decided to be experimental.

Ok, maybe not that experimental because I made these oats all the time when I was blog-less. Anyway, I present you all a change from the usual oatsies that was pretty darn fab.

SNB13241

Chocolate oats! (1/3 c oats, 1 1/3 c water, 1/2 banana, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder) Topped with some Crunchy Quinoa mix and drizzled with almond butter.

PRETTIEST BROWN BOWL EVER!

SNB13242

Seriously. It was awesome.

~~~~~~~~~
Post-breakfast I went and played with my Hello Kitty snow globe. Just like any other 22yo would do.
SNB13244
And at work I injured myself.. Whoever said that working in an office isn’t dangerous was completely wrong. Ever heard of paper cuts? Huh?
SNB13246
I’m sure Bella has.
Picture%2013_5
So maybe you’re one of those poor people who have to work on Saturdays but I’m a super normal Monday-Friday employee and am SO glad that it’s Friday. I stayed at work until 9 PM yesterday which simply wasn’t that sexy.
But tonight is all about playing! I’ll meet up with my friend Christine and we’ll go and have a fab time with these guys:
robert-downey-jr-jude-law
Jude kinda looks like a hyena in this picture…
The thing is.. The film starts at 8 PM. And yoga ends at 7:30 PM (although it’s usually 10 minutes longer). I would make it in time but I would be without dinner (gasp!) and couldn’t take a shower (GASP!). So I think I’ll skip yoga class today but go on a run instead and do some yoga after my movie-date.
That’s all for now. I will save my superbe news for my next post. Muahahaha.
Q: What’s your favourite film? That’s a tough question, I know! As you all probably know, I love going to the movies / watching DVDs… And so it’s pretty difficult to choose my favourite film of all times. But some of my faves are: Star Wars (I’m a nerd, I know), Amélie, Girl Interrupted, LotR, A Knight’s Tale, Shaun of the Dead, The Boat that Rocked, As It Is In Heaven, Across the Universe, … and approximately 3984298 more.
Change Is Good
Posted in Dinner, Yoga on January 28th, 2010 by Karin – 5 Comments
So yeah about that title.. I am going to change things a bit with this blog. Now, don’t sweat, I’ll still post daily but it won’t be a “I ate this and that…” blog anymore. Not that I don’t love reading blogs like these, (I do!!!), I just think that focusing more on good meals and other health related stuff would fit better (for me). But I’ll probably sometimes also post about daily eats – I’ll just go with the flow and do what suits best.
Plus: I just changed the font size as well because seriously, who can stand Arial 12? ;)
I hope you guys are ok with this but if you now want to come after me with a butcher’s knife.. That’s ok too because most readers are from the States anyway. Ha! CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!
You know, maybe I’ll crawl back and bug you all with my daily eats again next week but this baby banana is still pretty young and I have to see what works best for me. Sorry if that’s a pain in the a**.
So, with that being said.. There’s going to be more ranting!
  • Michael
  • Jamie
  • Lentils
  • Yoga
  • Planks
Now, the first two guys aren’t potential boyfriend candidates (I’m still happy with you, daaarling! ;) ) but two of my favourite foodies.
Michael Pollan
Ok, it’s almost embarrassing to say but I haven’t read any of his books! *blush* I have had “In Defence of Food” at home for over a year but I’m terrible when it comes to reading.. I have at least 30 “must read!” books at home and I’m currently reading 3 at the same time. But I’ll definitely get to “In Defence of Food” as soon as possible. Despite the fact that I haven’t read his books I have read a ton about him online. When I checked my e-mails this morning I saw the newsletter of Epicurious and there’s a fabulous interview with Michael that you should all check out.  Also: I saw on The Kind Life that Michael Pollan (and Alicia Silverstone) was (were) on Oprah yesterday. Did anyone watch it? I still need to find it online because, well, we don’t get Oprah over here. Duh.
Jamie Oliver
An other guy that I think is pretty amazing is Jamie Oliver. Mum and I used to watch his show all the time and I love how he made British schools serve healthier food and generally makes cooking fun and even cool. In the same Epicurious newsletter I saw Jamie’s Valentine’s Menu. I know the day is still weeks away but if you want to get some inspiration.. here’s some good stuff! :) Valentine’s Day isn’t very important to us but this year we’ll go snowshoeing and snowboarding on that weekend. (Only because that weekend fits us, not because of V-Day.)
Now.. On to food pics!
We had quite the discussion before/after yesterday’s swimming session. “I’m craving quinoa” – “I’d rather fancy corn” – “Alright so let’s make both” – “No if we cook together, then we should also eat the same stuff” – “But I don’t eat meat” – “Yeah but that’s not the same”.. And it went on an on. I was on Team quinoa by the way. We then settled for sweet potatoes that sadly went unpictured…
We had them with a side of broccoli, roasted tomatoes and lentil curry! Oh how I’ve missed my lentils! We made them a bit pseudo-Indian because we added a curry mix and some ground coriander.
SNB13235
SNB13236
And then we tried this little piece of magic:
SNB13234
Yoga
I’ve been working in this office for 2,5 years and always wanted to take my yoga mat to work and do a quick session on lunchtime. I never made it. Until yesterday. Hooray! It was so refreshing and fab, will do that a lot from now on!
Plank challenge…
…is going good now. 1:20 was hard but not as hard as expected. It’s all mental, me thinks. 1:25 awaits me today! Woooo!
Alright that’s all. For today. I have something super exciting to share but this post is already super text heavy so I’ll leave it for tomorrow.
Also: I didn’t forget about the missing Japan recaps!! I will post them this weekend.
No Q for today. Just let me know what you think of my blog change. Cheers!
Cold. Very Cold.
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch, Working Out on January 27th, 2010 by Karin – 17 Comments
IT’S FREEZING!! Seriously, it feels like winter has decided to stop by with full force today. I seriously don’t know what my friends in Scandinavia do but I’m such a chicken when it comes to freezing temperatures. My fingers almost froze off on my walk to the office. Maybe it’s time to start taking the bus? Ugh.. No. Me prefers walking. Even if it’s effing freezing.
By the way these lame morning posts will stop.. tomorrow. ;) Yesterday night I almost started writing but then I realized that I’d be at my BF’s place tonight (so no blogging) and I honestly couldn’t let you guys suffer and leave you one day without the glorious sunshine that is brought to your lives by Give Me Bananas. ;) (Major sarcasm over here).
Yesterday was so much better than Monday and super busy at work. I also found out that I don’t have to work from Friday to Saturday (because of the World Economic Forum), hooray! Normal weekend for yours truly!
So I was pretty late again yesterday morning (what’s up these days?) but I managed to eat quite a decent breakfast.
SNB13218
Easy egg, bread with PB and apple slices. Good stuff!
Fast forward to lunch. Enter favourite lazy comfort meal!
GREENS!
SNB13219
Oh no wait.. there’s something hidden underneath all that spinach and avocado…
SNB13222
organic spinach & ricotta fiori! LOVE!
SNB13221
Mmmm comford food at its best!
I also had some kombucha and 1/2 orange..
SNB13220
SNB13223
And then I was on a mini-meals mission (because I didn’t want to eat anything heavy before the 8:15 PM pilates class). First I had some quark with clementine as an afternoon snack (even though I wasn’t that hungry..).
SNB13224
You quark-less people are totally missing out. This baby had 120 calories and 20 grams of protein. Two thumbs up!
I’ve never had this snack before but it’s so lovely and creamy and made me feel like I was eating dessert.
After I got back home I wasn’t sure what to eat. Something light but filling? Hmm.. After staring at my produce for 5 minutes I decided to go the simple way and have some raw fennel topped with goat cheese and pepper plus a hard boiled egg.
SNB13225
(And then I grabbed a small piece of bread and topped it with a tiny bit of Nutella. Hey, I was still hungry!!!)
All in all this meal worked really well and didn’t bug me in pilates class. I got back home starving though and so I ate some crunchy quinoa (it’s good!) and forgot about the fact that I actually hate eating after 9 PM. This small bowl and a cup of tea did the trick.
SNB13226
Do you remember when I told you about the daily planks that I was going to do and the 5 seconds I’d add each day? Well.. Yeah… About that… I kind of forgot about that challenge after the 1:15 plank that I managed to do. Failure! But hey, I’m not going to give up and continue with the challenge today. 1:20 min. Yep.
Q: What’s your favourite healthy comfort food? I really like chillies (even though I rarely make them) or soups. Oh and warm bread is stellar as well.
Dinner Was A Winner
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch, Working Out on January 26th, 2010 by Karin – 12 Comments
So how was everyone’s Monday? Mine dragged on a bit but dinner was great though. :) (We’ll get there later).
Thanks for all the comments regarding my back. It doesn’t hurt anymore but I had to skip yoga yesterday because I didn’t want to mess with it. I honestly don’t know if/when I’ll be back at bodypump although I should do some strength training. But on the other hand, I don’t know what do do in the weight room of the gym either! I grew up being extremely active (10 years of ballet, 3 years of taekwon-do plus running) but I’ve never done any strength training. So I’m a bit overwhelmed. Maybe I should really just stick to yoga because it’s something I am familiar with and is a great strength training as well. Bodypump is a good workout but you can easily put on too much weight and hurt yourself. Naomi was so right when she said “One reason I dont like them (as a trainer) is that everyone has these heavy bars doing lots of moves and there is ONE instructor who cannot see if everyone has proper form…”.
Anyway, thanks for being super smart readers :) .
My boyfriend commented yesterday (while reading my blog) that all I seem to do is eat. HA! Well that’s almost true. Almost.
I was late again yesterday so I grabbed some frozen protein pancakes and ate them at work with banana and almond butter.
SNB13199
After working up a storm (or something like that) it was time for rabbit food and an orange!
SNB13200
SNB13201
I then read a bit (Yoga School Dropout is so funny!) and went back to work.
Zzzzz…..
:)
Mid-afternoon snackeroo:
SNB13203
(I have a crazy love affair with almond butter)
My back was still annoying me so I decided to cheer myself up a bit and have a fun dinner. I called Silvio and we decided to have pizza. But not just any pizza…
SNB13205
Mini pizzas made in a raclette oven! It’s so much fun and also a great crowd pleaser at dinner parties. So if you ever run out of ideas and want to make something comfortable and easy AND want to spend lots of time with your guests: Try raclette oven pizzas!
We prepared lots of fun toppings (mushrooms, goat cheese, mozzarella, carrots, spinach, ham –for him-, tomato sauce and pesto). I also wanted to get pepperoni but the organic ones were from Morocco so I didn’t buy them.
SNB13207
It actually takes some time to eat dinner because you always have to wait until the pizzas are ready but I really wanted a leisurely dinner and chat with the BF.
It’s super easy to make the pizzas by the way. To make sure that the crust gets crunchy we always put them on top of the raclette oven for a few minutes.
SNB13208
And afterwards transfer it into the oven. The pizza is ready when it’s bubbly and lightly browned – just like any other “normal” pizza.
SNB13209
SNB13210
SNB13211
SNB13212
SNB13213
SNB13214
SNB13217
Haha it looks like a lot but it wasn’t really that much. We also had some salad on the side for a healthy dose of greens.
SNB13206
This dinner is a winner! :)
Other “benefits” of raclette oven pizzas are that it’s great for portion control as you’re eating very small pizzas and take your time. You can also use WW dough (I didn’t have the time to make/buy any so I used the organic pre-made dough that we had).
Good stuff!
Q: What is your staple meal for dinner parties? I really like making Indian food because it doesn’t require much time in the kitchen after the guests have arrived (the sauce can simmer away and I make the rice in my rice cooker). I hate spending too much time in the kitchen and not be with the guests.
Weekend, Where Are You?
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch, Working Out on January 25th, 2010 by Karin – 11 Comments
WHERE DID THE WEEKEND GO???
Please let me know if anyone has seen it. Thanks.
Don’t you agree with me that the weekend flew by in approximately 4985,3 seconds? Sigh. I can’t believe that it’s already Monday! How depressing! ;)
Anyway, here’s a little recap:
SATURDAY
-Right after writing my last post I went straight back to bed and slept until 12 AM. Fab!
-We eventually got up and made banana pancakes (recipe by ED&BV). Took a pic but my camera ate it. :(
-Went to the city and shopped at the sports store (protein powder and shaker!), book store (books! Surprise!) and groceries’ store (tea).
-Got back home to Silvio’s casa and snapped the following picture (of the books that I bough):
SNB13191
-Got watched by his roommate while taking that photo and his eyes clearly questioned my sanity. I mean, come on! Who takes photos of books? Silly.
-Read a bit and then headed outside to get on the train.
-Go to my aunt and uncle’s birthday party at the restaurant. Eat my weight in focaccia.
-Take the 11:47 PM train back to Bern.
-Skip Selina’s boyfriend’s party and go to bed instead.
(No run because I realized that I haven’t taken a day off and really needed some rest)
SUNDAY
-Breakfast
SNB13192
SNB13193
-Go to the 12 AM bodypump class. Realize that it’s a bit silly.
-Get back home at 2 PM and eat lunch (tagliatelle with pesto, spinach and mozzarella):
SNB13194
-Make a batch of hemp-nola for my dad.
-Watch 24 and read a bit.
-Go to my parent’s place for dinner.
SNB13195
SNB13196
SNB13197
-Go back home. Watch more 24 with the BF and crash.
Now, wasn’t that super eventful? ;)
It was a good weekend though. Very relaxing and lovely and I got to spend it with my boyfriend whom I didn’t see the past week because he was busy being a student and doing students stuff.
On a downside.. I hurt my back in bodypump yesterday. Those squats with weights were super bad. I listened to the instructor and put more weight on it which probably wasn’t the smartest idea. I did keep my core activated so I am pretty sure that the weight was just too heavy for me.
Maybe I should just stick to breakdance yoga :) .
Salads. Not Diets.
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Yoga on January 23rd, 2010 by Karin – 11 Comments
Hey guys!
So yesterday I decided to go to yoga despite my super sore legs which turned out to be a good idea. My teacher was away and an other taught her class. Now, I said it was a good idea because she teaches Ashtanga yoga which means lots of crazy arm poses that reminded me of break dancing. It was super fun even though I couldn’t manage to do the difficult poses. I like getting better and seeing improvements in my practice which is why I like poses that seem completely impossible.
Anyway, I got back home, showered and had dinner and ran out of the house again to meet my friends for a drink. I ended up being the only one who drank water but I just wasn’t in a beer or wine mood yesterday.
But let’s quickly back up a little.. Oh no, wait! Before I get to breakfast: Some of you have asked what quark is. Well wikipedia knows it all gives us the answer. Quark is actually also called curd cheese and even though it’s considered as cheese it reminds me more of greek yogurt.
SNB13181
Breakfast was stellar. Seriously that hemp-nola is SO good! It’s worth buying the book only for this recipe, I swear!
Work was a bit slow yesterday and for lunch we all went to that local restaurant where I had a huge salad because the veggie option (veggie pie) didn’t really appeal to me. My colleagues asked me if I were on a diet. (???) Why do people always assume that you’re on a diet when you “only” eat a salad for lunch? Have people asked you the diet question as well because you stuck to lettuce?
My diet salad (ha!) kept me full until 4 PM but I knew that I had to eat something or otherwise I’d starve during yoga so I grabbed an apple and a hard boiled egg.
SNB13182
After my arms became jelly I headed home and only had one thing on my mind: Lentils! We ate a ton of lentils on our canoe trip in Sweden because they don’t go bad and are a great source of protein.
I simply cooked 1/2 cup of dry lentils (I almost wrote oats. Oops!) with 1 cup of water and some salt. I swerved it with fennel and broccoli that was topped with salt and cayenne pepper.
SNB13184
I forgot how much I missed fennel. Sigh. Apparently some people don’t like it. Silly. Oh and I missed lentils too. Sigh no. 2
Then I got Americanized and had a PB&J bread, two chocolate chip balls and a waffle biscuit thing that Selina bought and I had to try of course ;) .
SNB13187
Good dinner. Happy Karin.
I’m actually going to spend the entire weekend with my boyfriend. It’s going to be fun as we have a lot planned. Brunch, run, dinner at a restaurant to celebrate my aunt’s and uncle’s birthday and a house party at Selina’s boyfriend’s place today and bodypump tomorrow. Yes, bodypump. With the boyfriend. HA. It’s going to be hilarious.
Got to go and prepare brunch now! I see an other ED&BV recipe in the very near future! Have a great day you all! :)
Random Q of the day: Do you work out with your significant others? Yep I do. We go for a run / swim on Wednesdays but also sometimes work out on the weekends (mostly running). It’s fun to spend time together but get some activity in at the same time! :)
These Boots Were Made For Walking
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch on January 21st, 2010 by Karin – 10 Comments
So last night I had veggie noodles and then an ice cream at the cinema but I bet I burned that all plus 198323978 more calories before 9 AM today.
First I headed to the 7 AM yoga class which went longer than planned and so I missed the tram AND the bus and had to literally power walk to work because I have to be in the office at 9 AM sharp. I must have looked like some super huge moron.
The wet snow didn’t help either and that salt made my boots look ugly. BOOOOH!
SNB13173
Do they put salt on the roads in other countries as well?
Well at least yoga was amazing. It’s so nice to start the day with a great practice.
After I got to work (breathing like I’ve just ran a marathon) I defrosted some protein pancakes and topped them with almond butter and banana. I had 1/3 of a banana with almond butter before class. It’s actually not recommended to eat anything 2 hours before you practice yoga but I needed something small to get me started.
SNB13172
My hand looks funny and fat, I know. It’s a very unflattering thumb-photo. ;)
I worked my way through my to-do list and snacked on a clementine. Lunch was thrown together but was so good!
Endive salad with 1/4 avocado..
SNB13174
Plus yogurt and muesli
SNB13175
And now the entire party together! :)
SNB13176
So yes, yesterday wasn’t very healthy but today was good. Until dinner. ;) I snacked on some apple and almond butter and then an armant cracker right before squash.
Squash was awesome tonight. The match with Karin (my friend, not myself ;) ) was intense! Afterwards we went to an Italian restaurant where I got a small pizza with spinach, mozz, quark and tomatoes. I ate most of it, I swear I sometimes have a stomach the size of Brasil.
SNB13177
That wormy white thing is quark by the way. Doesn’t it look super funny? ;)
When I got back home I was craving some balls (all together now: TWSS!) so I made some.
SNB13179
Now I’m waiting until the laundry is done. Boring!
Sorry, this is such a short post but I’m super tired and I can’t wait until the laundry’s done so I can go to bed. Yawn.
Q: What’s your favourite pizza topping? My motto is the more veggies the merrier but I sometimes also really like super simple toppings.
Back To Pandora
Posted in Breakfast, Concerts, Films, Lunch on January 20th, 2010 by Karin – 11 Comments
Hi guys! I’m posting this a little bit sooner than usual because I’m going to have dinner with my family (Korean!) and then go and see “You’re not in Kansas anymore. You’re on Pandora” AVATAR. Yes I like seeing films twice at the cinema. Feel free to call me a nerd! (But to be honest: My parents want to go and see it and they threatened me to drag me by my hair to the cinema if I refused to come. Seriously! I mean, come on.. You wouldn’t want to get your jacket (and hair!) ruined either, would you? ;) ) +For people who don’t understand my weird sarcastic humour and are scared of my mum and dad: I was kidding.
Other great news of the day: I’m going to see MUSE again! I got the tickets for their show in Bern this morning and I’m very very VERY excited.
+Cheers to you guys for all those tips! I think I need to eat a bigger afternoon snack and something light before those late classes. I’m not a huge fan of eating afterwards because I usually get back home around 10 pm..
I had a very hard time getting up this morning. Something about warm blankets and cold winter days I guess. Eventually I got up and did some yoga. I was having fun doing planks so I did 2 one minute planks. I think I could have held it longer but my goal was just to reach one minute.. Tomorrow will be 1:05 and then I’ll add an other 5 seconds every day until I reach 2 minutes. Wonder if I can do that. ;)
Breakfast was fantastic. I seriously wonder why people sometimes don’t bother with eating breakfasts – it’s my favourite meal of the day!
I had some whole wheat cereal, hemp-nola, soy milk and a kiwi.
SNB13166
At work I snacked on a clementine and was super busy until I realized that it was time for lunch.
I had lots of leftovers so I grabbed two small WW wraps and stuffed one with about 1/2 cup of spinach quinoa and 1/4 avocado. The other one had some plain yogurt (about one TBSP) and the last veggie sausage slices. Very good and filling lunch!
SNB13167
SNB13168
And then my sweet tooth kicked in. So I decided to go to the groceries store and buy bananas (which I needed anyway). After I got back I still wanted something sweet and so I grabbed two mini Basler Läckerli’s. We always have sweets in our office but it’s not too hard to resist them (because I most often don’t like them that much ;) ).
SNB13169
In the afternoon I snacked on a banana. It’s absolutely impossible to take a good photo of a whole banana (have you ever tried snapping one?). So here’s a weird one:
SNB13171
I’m actually typing this on my work computer (but not at work ;) ) but I’m heading out now for some fun time with my fam. See ya!
Of Challenges And Oats
Posted in Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch, Working Out on January 19th, 2010 by Karin – 12 Comments
First off: Cheers to all the new commenters! I love it when people de-lurk! :) Stop by and say hi, I swear I only bite on rare occasions! (Kidding. A bit. ;) )
The fabulous Tara Stiles is doing a 7 Day Health Challenge, come and join the party! For the challenge I’m going to write down every single thing that I eat (if I forgot to take a picture) and be more conscious about what I consume.
So on to… Breakfast!
SNB13153
Oats in a jar or OIAJ for insiders. :)
I promised to take step by step photos of my oats making process so here it goes:
First I combine 1/3 cup of oats with 1 cup of water and bring it to a “boil”.
SNB13142SNB13143
Then I reduce the heat and let it cook a bit. That’s when I usually go and put on some mascara (on my lashes – not on the oats ;) ).
After a few minutes, I add some sliced bananas.
SNB13145
Followed by a little more water if the oatmeal gets too thick and then I add one scoop of soy protein powder, a squirt of agave and a dash of cinnamon.
SNB13146
SNB13147
SNB13148
Now, that’s my standard oatmeal! But of course I can’t just ditch the toppings! I think my favourite combination is hemp seeds / flax seeds / almond butter.
SNB13150SNB13152
Since I already had my almond butter in the jar, I didn’t need any on my oats.
SNB13155
So good! Plus: Check out my fun long spoon!
I hope that was helpful :) .
Today was a very snacky day (“snacky” apparently isn’t a real word. I disagree! ;) ). Mid-morning I had a pear, clementine (or tangerine, STILL DON’T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!) and 5 mungbean chips.
I found them this morning in my pantry and was surprised to see that they survived this long! They’re truly amazing and I even like them more than real chips! Their ingredients list is great as well: Just mungbeans and salt!
Lunch was rather on the rushed side because I had errands to run and so I had some leftover spinach quinoa and two carrots plus quorn sausage :) .
And then I went to the organic food store which was a huge mistake because I bought some amazing stuff but had to pay a small fortune for it.
Almond butter, Crunchy peanut butter, chocolate quinoa muesli, sencha tea, almond milk (which is hopefully better than the other brand that they had), rice syrup and sweet potato & buckwheat noodles!! Great stuff, right? (I bet you guys understand my enthusiasm for groceries ;) ).
Work was busy but I had an afternoon snack anyway :) .
Apple and peanut butter. I truly believe that fruits & nut butter are the greatest snacks on earth.
Dinner was a huge mistake. Not because it wasn’t tasty (it was), it just sat in my stomach like a rock and was a pain in pilates class!
I was craving pesto so that’s what I had:
One bundle of wakame & brown rice noodles with pesto sauce and topped with even more quorn sausage. I know, all that processed stuff isn’t that great but I had to use up that sausage or otherwise it would have gone bad.
I seriously need to learn to eat lighter before a “late” class! Do you have any tips?
Pilates was good but a bit boring to be honest. My teacher is on holiday and an other girl jumped in. My abs were burning though which was great.
Anyway, I really need to go to bed now as it’s 10:30 pm and I want to get up early tomorrow morning! Talk to you soon!
Q: Do you work out late (after dinnertime)? I have yoga on Monday that starts on 7:45 pm and pilates on Tuesday at 8:15 pm.
