Switzerland is really pretty sometimes
but let’s back up a little
.
Saturday
Well I decided to take things a bit easy and skip spin class. I didn’t want to stress like some madwoman – it was Saturday after all. But I really wanted to do something and not sit around like a lazy bum so I decided to go to the gym. Gasp! I’ve never been to a gym before!! Well technically I have; I play squash and take the occasional pump class at a local gym but I’ve never been in the “real” gym area. I have to admit that I always made fun of gyms because I thought that the people kind or resemble hamsters in wheels. And I also said that I’d never go to a gym. Ha!
So what made me go there? Firstly – I couldn’t really use my arm because it hurt a lot so yoga would have been to painful. Secondly – I’m still on a running hiatus. Thirdly – I could not face the stepper again (so boring!). Alas, I went to the gym because I really like trying new things and don’t want to be narrow mined and keep thinking that gyms are lame.
However, the gym is crazy expensive so I bought a “10 entries” pass and decided to make the visit worth the money.
So I did:
30 minutes on the elliptical
45 minutes on the bike
Before I left I had a banana with PB and 2 chocolate chip balls
I had to leave the gym early because of the English exam (which went well but not as good as I wanted… “Hi Karin, where are you from?” – “I’m from Bern and I live here with my sister” – “And what do you do in Bern?” – “……..erm…. I live and work here (?)” so strange…). I had lunch before the exam of course.
Almost the same combo as last time but with sprouts and spelt pasta.
After the exam I whipped up some cookies to take with me to Stephanie’s dinner party. I made Janetha’s Chocolate Chip Cookies which turned out fabulous. I only had one though and they didn’t get as nice and flat as hers (what did I do wrong?) but I think that everyone liked them as well
.
Dinner at Stephanie’s place was fabulous – she and her boyfriend moved into an apartment together and we got to check it out for the first time on Saturday
. It’s so big and gorgeous, love it. Dinner was also great – we had pizza made in the raclette oven. It’s such a good idea as it doesn’t take much prepping time. I didn’t take any photos though because I just wanted to enjoy the time with my friends. Ste’s boyfriend makes the best salad sauce by the way. We were all raving about that salad and that poor guy had to make some new one all the time
.
Sunday
Well yesterday was all about Silvio and me. It’s our first dating anniversary today (aka 7th Dec)! However, celebrating on a Monday kind of sucks (if you’re busy with other stuff… like work for example
) so we decided to party like crazy one day early.
And with party like crazy I mean a fab breakfast, a hiking trip and dinner of course
We decided to go to the Beatus caves + took the train and bus to that place close to Interlaken and the gorgeous mountains. We also thought it would be fun to hike there.
I had a fun breakfast – bread + spinach + egg times two. Good hiking fuel, I can tell you that..
I love walking and hiking is always a blast – i honestly don’t know why “young people” don’t really seem to like it (maybe I’m a grandma deep down inside).
When we got to the caves we found out that they were closed. Ha! Well we should have read the info on the homepage a bit more carefully.
But we met this dude who was hanging out there:
It was quite cold so we decided to go to Interlaken and have a drink somewhere. Once we arrived in the town we saw that there was a big Christmas market.
We had a baileys coffee which was way too sweet but so warming. I gave about 1/3 to Silvio though.
Meet Silvio the hand model.
Afterwards we checked out the market and got pretty hungry as we only had some banana, almonds and dried apricots on our hike.
We actually went to Interlaken for a reason. We’ve always wanted to go to that Mexican restaurant that everyone talked about. Apparently it’s the only authentic Mexican restaurant in Switzerland. We had high expectations and were not disappointed.
This place is such a gem! If you ever go to Interlaken: Go to El Azteca!
We got some nachos with guacamole as appetizers.
And drank some Mexican Cabernet.
(The glasses were fabulous!)
I ordered the Sincornizadas which were so good but heavy due to the cheese (I gave 1 1/2 of them to the boyfriend)
He had the fajita con pollo loco
Homemade tortillas are so good!
The owner of the restaurant also wrote a cook book which we bought as well (as a gift to ourselves – It’s so much fun to have a boyfriend who loves food as well
).
The owner even wrote a dedication. In Spanish.
So cute.
(But apparently my name is Karen.. Who knew?
)
We then went back to Bern & I went to my place to change my clothes (I needed some posh business outfit today and wanted to stay at Silvio’s place). My sister came home at the same time and brought me something from mum:
Isn’t it cute? Do you guys also celebrate Saint Nicholas Day? Well over here it’s more an event for kids but my mum still gives us something. Love her.
Back at the boyfriend’s place we watched an episode of True Blood and ate some amazing Ice Cream. Crème d’or always has new and funky flavours and this one was amazing and spicy! Total mouth party!
Anyway, this was my weekend. How was yours?
Got to go back to work now. Have a good Monday!
(Happy anniversary S! Thanks for being my partner in crime. Love you more
)

Happy Anniversary! I love hiking, too. It is my favorite activity. I miss it here in NYC and I am hoping to move somewher wher I can access the woods/ mountains much more easily.
Your eats for the weekend look fantastic. I love Mexican food, so I am excited for you guys that you found such a great place for dinner! xo
Mmmm…those chocolate chip balls look awesome! That’s so funny that you’re eating Mexican food in Interlaken. Random! But it looks delicious!
Your hiking pictures look fake, they’re so beautiful. Amazing!
India Chutney Ice Cream sounds AMAZING!
Great pictures! I want to go to Switzerland! I’m not a huge fan of Mexican food but I’d be willing to eat it if I went to all those places!!
A little late, but congratulations with your anniversary!
Your picture of Swiss natural beauty makes me homesick for the mountains (which holland so obiously lacks).
Kudos for joining a gym, I just quit mine
(but not because I’m lazy, they were! They kept closing randomly for no good reason -_-)
I like your cookies – fat, round cookies are cuter than flat ones IMO…
And I wanna go chrimstmas marketting too! (I went to Berlin and Keulen but I want more!) It’s great to see someone’s already getting presents
P.S. I don’t know if you already read my reply to your comment but your psychic abilities dazzle me: i DID go to inspiral (I loved Camden!) and I’m hoping you move to London in January, so that I could see you when I come in February (a)
Oh, you’re making me drool… how do you make the chocolate chip balls… i want!
