  1. It’s a fact!

    January 25, 2012 by Karin

Random Facts because I feel like it.

    - I wish I would think ‘Mad Men’ is amazing but I don’t. It’s ok but I really don’t see why it’s so hugely successful. Chain-smoking pricks who are nasty to women get kind of boring. But John Hamm’s easy on the eyes.
    - I grew up hating Brussel’s Sprouts and I want to give it another chance but for some odd reason I’m a bit terrified.
    - I don’t know how to cook meat.
    - I don’t like reviews. I always get the feeling that the reviewer thinks of himself/herself as superior. I also like having an own opinion and it often disagrees with reviews.
    - I am currently reading ‘American Psycho’ and I am shocked and thrilled in equal parts.
    - I’ve never watched any of the Godfather films.
    - Alexander Skarsgard is my future husband.
    - I sing when I snowboard. But never under the shower.
    - My left foot is longer than my right foot.
    - Working in an office in London is the same as working in an office in Bern.
    - In a perfect life I would spend all my time volunteering and being a health coach.
    - I wish I had a small dog.
    - I like travelling – especially flying – on my own.
    - My flatmates and I are currently obsessed with a Danish murder series called Forbrydelsen (The Killing). It’s in Danish with English subtitles. Danish is hilarious.
    - I always print out lots of recipes what I never end up making.
    - London’s club scene doesn’t interest me in the slightest.
    - George was my favourite Beatle.
    - I swear a lot. I need to watch the f-word when I’m in the office

  2. Love/Hate

    January 15, 2012 by Karin

Last Thursday I made my roommate join me for a jog. She hates running and ended up with a twisted ankle.

So the least I could do was to join her for a swim today.

The thing is.. I hate swimming.

However, as I was swimming my lanes I came to the conclusion that I actually really enjoyed it – I just hate everything else that comes with swimming in pools.
The chlorine, all the people, the water in general (ewww pee!), the part between the shower and getting into the pool, walking around in my bikini… You name it, I hate it. But swimming itself is actually almost meditative.

Nevertheless, my hair smells chemical now. Oh well.

I suppose you could also say that I should choose more natural waters such as lakes or seas but heck I live in London and I sure as hell won’t be splashing around in the Thames any time soon. (After all I’m not David Walliams). So I guess I will have to stick to pools.

But to be honest I’d much rather spend hours in the cinema these days. There are so many great films on right now – I don’t know where to start!

    Shame

Somebody give Michael Fassbender an Oscar STAT!

    The Artist

A silent film in black and white? You’ve got to be freaking kidding me. Hilarious.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Because I wonder what Hollywood’s take on such a graphic book is.

    War Horse

I actually like having a good cry every once in a while in the cinema.

Trouble is I have no idea when I would possibly have the time to go to the cinema…

Alright, got to run now. Love, Kx

  3. Them Coppers

    January 6, 2012 by Karin

    Goodness.

More has happened in the past 3 weeks than in the entire freaking year! (Btw happy new year!)

Ok I’m incredibly exaggerating of course but it definitely has been a rollercoaster ride.

I think it kind of hit rock bottom when the police broke down our door today.

    IMG_1792-1

It was all (of course!) a complete misunderstanding. A man called the police and sounded like he needed help desperately and then gave them our address and flat number. Last time I checked there were only 3 girls living here. I feel sorry for that man though – I hope someone got to him wherever he lives..

But I don’t want to dwell on the crappy things– the good stuff is so much better!

So think of a good memory multiply it with 98392398493 and add a dash or rainbow and unicorn and then you might start to get close to the amazingness that were the 2 weeks back home.

    There were crackers..

    IMG_1766-1

    There was snowboarding..

    IMG_1783-1

And muchos more that I won’t write about because I don’t want to sound like a complete cheeseball.

I hope you all also had a good Christmas and New Years wherever you are/were!

    Love,

    Kx

  4. Homebound

    December 17, 2011 by Karin

    Dudes,

I am out-limboed (fabulous word I just made up!) and am heading home to Switzerland this afternoon.

And heavens, I even survived the office’s Christmas party – although I only managed to stay until 10pm.. there’s only so much club-music I can handle..

Still haven’t bought a cheesy Christmas CD but I reckon there will be HMV at the airport so it’s not yet too late for some good torture-material.

    Love and peace.

    Kx

  5. why does it always rain on me?

    December 14, 2011 by Karin

    image

I kept writing and re-writing this post but nothing good came up. Maybe because I’m preoccupied with thinking about the weather. Fingers crossed that no snow storm will suddenly appear on Saturday!

So besides checking BBC weather every ten seconds I’m actually wrapping up work (last day tomorrow – Christmas party on Friday!) and keeping busy with other shenanigans such as:

    - Reading ‘The Kite Runner’. (I know, I know I’m late). I loved this book so much. Khaled Hosseini is so incredibly talented. It was also good to read fiction again after lots of (also interesting) books about running, nutrition and life.

    - Checking Der Bund online and following the federal council elections and secretly laughing by myself because there still is some good in this world.

    - Christmas present shopping. Oxford Street on a Saturday 2 weeks before Christmas. Enough said.

    - Watching this:

-IIN and chatting with my fellow students. I get inspired on a daily basis and am still amazed that there are so many like-minded people.

-Yoga and meditation. Same old same old. It prevents me from losing my head though which is good Smiley.

The UK is so Christmassy I actually kept singing Christmas songs in the office today. One colleague wondered where the singing came from and then he suggested I should sign up for X Factor. Good one buddy. I’ll be the next Leona Lewis.

I am actually thinking about getting a cheesy Christmas CD so I can go and torture my family and friends a bit. I think my dad would love some Wham! blasting out of the stereo.

So you see this post was rather uninspired but I bet you’ve all experienced this ‘waiting before something happens’ phase… like the days leading up to your wedding (I can imagine) or the minutes before Justin Bieber gets on stage. That anticipation.

Let’s call it limbo. That’s where I am at the moment. Until Saturday that is.

    Love kx

  6. Cupcake Decoration!

    December 8, 2011 by Karin

Groupons are often a bit crap and/or weird but every once in a while something fabulous comes along.

A few months ago one caught my eye and tonight for I got to spend two hours learning all about cupcake decoration. It was amazing considering my decoration skills were previously limited to slapping some icing on muffins.

So anyway, we got down to business and decorated away. Well.. Kind of. Decorating in a proper way is difficult! It requires technique and a steady hand. None of which I have.

Nevertheless I got some semi-decent ones done. I need more practice!

    IMG_1703 IMG_1704 IMG_1705 IMG_1706 IMG_1707

    Now who wants some cupcakes?

The other day I got an other artsy groupon but more about it at some later point.

    Love, K

  7. Christmas Rant

    December 1, 2011 by Karin

    Hi there!

I thought I’d chime in with zero photos but in case you care for some rambling you’re welcome to read on ;) .

So today’s 1 December, can you believe it? This time last year I was looking forward to travelling with my then-boyfriend and then moving to London. It seems like this year flew by and so much has happened.

This year has been one of the most exciting yet lonely years ever. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person and I’m so incredibly grateful for all the love and support in my life. Loneliness has had a very interesting effect on me.. It has made me more appreciative and comfortable in my own skin for some reason. I’d rather analyse loneliness instead of dwelling in it. That has made me get over it very quickly. It is possible to turn something negative into something positive though it’s hard work .

I love my studies but it also put me in a position where I have to watch every single penny. That was my choice though and whenever I feel frustrated because of money issues I remind myself of why I’m doing this. And it’s not like I have to live off cup noodles and can’t enjoy life. So I count myself as incredibly lucky.

Maybe it’s this time of year that makes me incredibly nostalgic. The closer we get to Christmas the more I can’t wait to go back home.
Christmas has never been a big deal in my casa (think manic Christmas tree shopping on the 23rd of December) but I just love it. I love Christmas. Not because of its religious background (I’m spiritual, not religious) but because I get to be with people I love.

So yeah, despite the fact that I live in a fab city I’m counting down the days until I fly back home (17th Dec!!).
I blame it on the Christmas season.

Goodness, this post turned out much more serious than intended. It’s so funny considering that I am usually a pretty light-hearted person. Oh well, like I said, it’s that time of the year..

16 days until I get to swoon over The Hunger Games with my mum, go running with my dad, chill out with my sister and have tea with all my amazing friends.

    Bring on the Holiday break!!!

Ps: I watched Lord of the Rings yesterday and holy cannoli can Gandalf run! I totally forgot that Ian McKellen is so light on his feet! My sister and I always used to giggle when we watched Gandalf run around (or when Aragorn sang, or when Frodo’s facial expression was particularly amusing –basically all the time- or when Legolas said another moronic elfish thing)… Oh I love being immature.

My mum, sis and kinda-brother-in-law came back from Japan the other day.

    I love Japan.

    I miss Japan.

    Anyhow..

To help my mum get over the jet lag (and to make you all finally read the book); here’s Katniss Everdeen:

  9. Woods & Food Babies

    November 28, 2011 by Karin

    Hiya pals!

Last weekend I left the big smoke and the crazy hours at work behind and headed up north to Derbyshire. People there (cough cough) think I have a posh Londoner accent. I disagree. My accent is cute and lovely and completely neutral – like Switzerland.

But then, while walking the dogs with Kirsty, I constantly exclaimed how beautiful the countryside was.

    Help!

    Anyway, I digress.

So I got to stay at Kirsty and Laraine’s lovely home and we had a fabulous time. First we went to yoga on Sat morning, had lunch at a cute café, walked the dogs for a few hours, educated ourselves with The Only Way Is Essex (smart!) and had a massive dinner at an Indian Restaurant. Sunday was how Sundays are supposed to be.. With a cozy lunch and drink and some chilling out. (I hate using any word that has something to do with “chill” but “relaxation” or “resting” sounds moronic as well).

    IMG_1584 IMG_1586 IMG_1587 IMG_1589 IMG_1590 IMG_1592

    Awww I love autumn!

Now are you prepared for a food extravaganza?

    IMG_1593 IMG_1596 IMG_1597 IMG_1599 IMG_1602

No, that’s not all the food we shared among us.. It’s what I had alone. The waitress wanted to take the plate away while I was still eating my naan bread.. I almost chopped her head off. (Kidding!)

I went home pregnant. So. Much. Food. (So good food!)

Thanks for everything Kirsty and Laraine! (ps shut uuuuuup!)

  10. Sunday

    November 20, 2011 by Karin

I think Sunday is underrated. It gets such a bad rep for being “The Day Before Monday” and all in all it’s just a very depressing day.

Unless you do things that you love to at least make the attempt to turn it into a great day!

    Studying…

    IMG_1553

    Lying around in my PJs..

    IMG_1556

    Snacking..

    IMG_1558

    Laughing..

    IMG_1559

    Doing “research”..

    IMG_1562

    Lunch..

    IMG_1566

    Running…

    IMG_1571

And for dinner I made us a fab veggie lasagne.

I’m also not too thrilled about Monday – or the entire upcoming week in fact (it’ll be so busy – I already can’t wait for it to be over) but hey that shouldn’t keep us from enjoying Sunday.

    What did you do today?

    xx K
